The latest horror film in the Conjuring series broke box office records, earning nearly $495 million globally. Now, it’s also topping the charts as the most-watched movie on HBO Max, building excitement for an upcoming prequel.
Although The Conjuring: Last Rites did well in theaters, it was advertised as the last movie in The Conjuring series. However, HBO Max is now working on a new project based on scenes from Last Rites that show Ed and Lorraine Warren when they were younger.
The latest installment in The Conjuring series earned the highest box office numbers of any film in the franchise. The movie features Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, a married couple who were actual paranormal investigators and the basis for the entire series.
James Wan, who directed the first The Conjuring movie, has also been a guiding force behind the creation of a whole series of related films, including The Nun, Annabelle, and The Curse of La Llorona.
What’s Next for The Conjuring Franchise?
Details are scarce about the upcoming Conjuring prequel, but director Rodrigue Huart, known for his short films, is being considered to helm the project. The script is being written by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who previously penned three films in The Conjuring series, including The Conjuring: Last Rites. James Wan is not expected to be involved due to a disagreement over compensation. It’s currently unknown if Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will reprise their roles, considering the film is a prequel.
Information about the project is limited, but Nancy Won, who has worked on shows like Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Supernatural, and Jericho, has been brought on board as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
The Conjuring: Last Rites is the third movie in The Conjuring series, following the original film from 2013. The story is based on a real case investigated by Ed and Lorraine Warren, known as the Smurl haunting. In the movie, Ed and Lorraine travel to Pennsylvania to help a family experiencing a disturbing presence. During their investigation, they face a demon from a past case that continues to torment Lorraine even years later.
Michael Chaves directed The Conjuring: Last Rites, based on a script by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, with story contributions from James Wan. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine Warren, and the film features younger versions of the Warrens played by Orion Smith and Madison Lawlor in flashback scenes. Mia Tomlinson portrays the Warrens’ daughter, Judy, with Emmy Nolan playing her in flashbacks. Ben Hardy stars as Judy’s boyfriend, Tom Spera.
As a big fan of the Conjuring universe, I’m excited to share that The Conjuring: Last Rites is now available to stream on HBO Max! And it’s not just that one – you can also watch all the other Conjuring films, including the original, The Conjuring 2, and The Devil Made Me Do It. If you’re in the mood for even more scares, the entire Annabelle trilogy, both The Nun movies, and The Curse of La Llorona are all there too. It’s a horror fan’s dream!
