Following the disappointing reception of *Blitzkrieg 3* in 2017, the *Blitzkrieg* series has been on hold, and there’s no indication it will be revived soon. However, dedicated fans still have plenty to enjoy thanks to the modding community. Recently, version 1.0 of the highly anticipated mod *Achtung Panzer 2: Ostfront* for the original *Blitzkrieg* game was finally released.
This mod adds a huge single-player campaign where you take command of the German army. It’s an ambitious project, featuring 51 missions across 12 chapters that recreate battles on the Eastern Front and throughout Europe during World War II, from September 1939 to May 1945. The missions are made even more engaging with advanced scripting, creating battles unlike anything in the original game.
Every map in this mod was carefully designed to represent actual places. Plus, Achtung Panzer 2 introduces more than 230 new military units from Germany, the Soviet Union, Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Czechoslovakia. These units are recreated with a focus on realism – as much as the Blitzkrieg game engine allows – particularly regarding their armor, weapons, ammunition, and camouflage.
We’ve significantly improved the game’s balance, encouraging players to use a variety of units, weapons, and tactics. Previously, some players could win by only using a small number of very strong choices, but now a more diverse approach is needed.
Overall, this is a fantastic update. With its high level of refinement and extensive content, *Achtung Panzer 2: Ostfront* feels less like a fan creation and more like an official installment in the series that was previously undiscovered.
