I’m really noticing a resurgence of interest in this show! It’s a faith-based drama, and with the sixth season just around the corner, it’s actually climbing the charts on Prime Video again. It’s cool to see it becoming a streaming hit all over again.
According to Flixpatrol, the series *The Chosen* is currently ninth in the U.S., a position it’s maintained for the last seven days. Created by Dallas Jenkins, this historical drama focuses on the life of Jesus of Nazareth, but with a fresh perspective. Rather than solely focusing on the divine, the show tells Jesus’ story through the experiences of those around him—his followers, Roman leaders, and everyday people living in Galilee during the first century—and their struggles with faith.
Since its debut in 2019, *The Chosen* has become incredibly popular around the world, attracting around 280 million viewers – about a third of whom don’t identify with any religion. Featuring Jonathan Roumie as Jesus alongside Shahar Isaac, Elizabeth Tabish, and Paras Patel, the show explores universal themes of what it means to be human, finding purpose, and the power of belief.
Initially, almost no one expected it to become so incredibly popular. The project started as a small, fan-funded effort and ultimately became the most successful series of its type. Jenkins and his team avoided the usual studio approach, funding the first seasons directly through contributions from fans. This allowed the show to be available to watch for free around the world, using a system where fans supported the show so it could continue.
The series became incredibly popular during the COVID-19 pandemic, offering comfort to millions of viewers. Creator Jenkins embraced its broad appeal and expanded distribution through various partnerships. By 2025, the series had earned over $120 million from movie theater releases, with seasons 3, 4, and 5 first debuting in cinemas before becoming available for streaming.
Thanks to a deal with Amazon MGM Studios, seasons 5, 6, and 7 of *The Chosen* will first be shown in movie theaters before becoming available exclusively on Prime Video for 90 days – a very unusual arrangement for a show with religious themes. The show’s recent popularity proves its compelling approach: *The Chosen* doesn’t simply retell Bible stories, it explores the complex personalities of the characters, giving them depth beyond traditional depictions.
Fans Can Look Forward to Two More Seasons of The Chosen
Production on Season 6 started in April 2025, and the creator hinted at a more serious and thoughtful direction for the story. After covering the Last Supper and Jesus’ arrest in the previous season, the new installment will focus on the events leading up to the crucifixion – promising the most emotionally powerful and spiritually significant storyline so far.
I’ve been really impressed with *The Chosen*. It’s completely changed my expectations for shows about faith. It feels like a high-quality, big-screen movie, and it really connects with your emotions. It’s not just faith audiences who are noticing either – the show has won awards from groups like the GMA and K-Love, as well as recognition from Movieguide, which shows it’s being appreciated by both religious and mainstream entertainment communities.
You can now watch seasons 1 through 5 of *The Chosen* on Prime Video. Season 6 will arrive in 2027, and the show will finish with its final season in 2028.
