After nearly six decades, the original character who inspired The Punisher is getting his own film. Though he seems like a straightforward character to bring to the screen, all three previous Punisher movies weren’t successful. While Dolph Lundgren’s 1989 film has gained a dedicated fanbase, it didn’t get wide enough release to launch a series.
The 2004 Punisher movie did okay, but the lead actor, Thomas Jane, didn’t return for a follow-up. The next attempt, Punisher: War Zone, was Marvel’s lowest-earning film in 2008. However, it’s since gained a following as a cult classic. Now, after 18 years, the Punisher is returning to the big screen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, though Jon Bernthal’s version of the character will have a smaller role.
The Punisher Was Inspired By The Executioner Novels
It makes sense that Spider-Man and the Punisher (Frank Castle) are finally facing off in a movie, considering Frank was originally created as an enemy for Spider-Man. He first appeared in 1974’s The Amazing Spider-Man #129, where a villain called the Jackal hired Frank to try and defeat the web-slinger.
Even though he started as a villain, the Punisher became popular enough to get his own comic book series. It was rare for a superhero to kill at the time, which made him stand out among Marvel’s heroes. Frank Castle, the Punisher, was created by Gerry Conway, who was inspired by the novels featuring Mack Bolan, The Executioner.
The Executioner series featured Mack Bolan, a Vietnam War veteran who became a one-man army against the mafia after a personal loss. Starting in 1969, these fast-paced paperbacks became incredibly popular, running for over 400 books before concluding in 2020.
I’ve always found it fascinating how Frank Castle, The Punisher, was inspired by a real person, Jake Bolan. Bolan was an incredible sniper in Vietnam and earned the nickname ‘The Executioner’ because of it. When you look at both of them, there are a lot of similarities – they both fought in Vietnam, used unconventional fighting methods, and were really inventive with weapons. Though, obviously, only The Punisher is known for that iconic skull symbol!
The Executioner Is Finally Getting A Movie After Decades Of Failed Attempts
Shane Black is famous for writing the screenplay for Lethal Weapon and directing films like Iron Man 3. As a child, he was an avid reader, particularly enjoying action-packed series such as Edge and the Parker novels. He recently adapted the Parker books into the film Play Dirty, and his next project will bring The Executioner to the big screen.
The project will pair actor Fred Williamson with director Shane Black, known for films like Die Hard. While this isn’t the first attempt to revive The Executioner, several previous efforts have fallen through. Back in the 1970s, Steve McQueen was set to star in a version written by James Bond screenwriter Richard Maibaum, but it never came to fruition.
In the 1980s, Burt Reynolds reportedly showed interest in adapting the novels. More recently, in 2014, Bradley Cooper was involved in a different attempt. A particularly well-known failed project starred Sylvester Stallone and martial arts star Cynthia Rothrock, with Joel Silver producing and William Friedkin directing. Unfortunately, the project fell apart due to creative clashes between the lead actor, the director, and the producer.
Jon Bernthal Would Be Perfect For The Executioner, But His Punisher Commitments Rule Him Out
Despite being created decades ago, The Executioner still has a lot of potential as a movie franchise. The characters Black and Silver make a fantastic action duo, and there’s plenty of story material to draw from. Many believe Jon Bernthal would be perfect for the role of Mack Bolan in a future film, but it’s ironic that his current role as the Punisher makes that unlikely.
Jon Bernthal perfectly balances charm and intensity, and he looks convincingly capable in a fight – exactly what the lead role in The Executioner demands. With the talented team behind this film, it’s likely they’ll land a big star. Perhaps this is the role Henry Cavill has been waiting for, after not quite finding the right fit with James Bond.
