The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras Recap: Blood in the Water

As a longtime fan of The Challenge, I must say that this season has been quite the rollercoaster. From the moment Cara made her triumphant return to the franchise, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement. However, it seems that this season is more about the drama than the competition, which leaves me a bit disappointed.

Following T.J.’s announcement that the team is departing Vietnam, they hastily return home to gather their Korean eye masks and ankle weights, arrange their clothes for the early-morning flight’s unknown destination. Bananas opts for a golden shroud-like blanket, reminiscent of what final girls wear in horror movies when the ambulance arrives, while Rachel selects a Canadian tuxedo. If any more evidence were needed to suggest that Rachel might be psychopathic, it’s her decision to wear rigid pants on the one 4 a.m. morning when she’ll spend countless hours on a charter plane, despite wearing athleisure and spandex for over two months straight.

Upon their arrival in the Philippines, they find that their usual dwelling, which was supposed to be Bowser’s Castle, has been transformed into a relaxing, tropical villa instead. MTV should remove the Vrbo link. The group indulges in piña coladas by the pool before gathering for dinner, where the red wine freely mixes with their already tipsy senses. In a manner reminiscent of teenagers on the final night of summer camp, they reminisce about cherished memories from the passionate, hormone-charged season they shared together. Instead of picking common highlights like the color war or the play Jack and the Beanstalk, Tori expresses her enjoyment of the fact that this season felt less like one large group controlling the game and more like “a big conflict among many people.

In my humble opinion, as a film critic, Bananas swiftly seizes the moment to lash out, asserting that Tori, in truth, embodies the role of a machine. At this point, Tori tries to reason logically with her past ally, suggesting they agree to disagree about their disagreement and move on. However, Bananas, acting like a petulant child who’s just had his favorite toy taken away, dismisses her proposal – he wants to avoid any future collaboration as proof that Tori’s actions against him have repercussions. It seems likely that deep down, Bananas realizes his reaction is excessive, but if he doesn’t make Tori’s life a living hell forevermore, it could be seen as a sign of weakness by other contestants, potentially breaking their loyalty to him. This could prove detrimental since reputation and intimidation are Bananas’ main strategies for making significant progress in the game.

In this week’s game, the action takes place within the breathtaking grounds of a Spanish fortress. The competitors will need to scramble up the fortress stairs to collect 40 bricks, and then trade them for decorative planks that they’ll use as puzzle pieces on their descent. Fittingly, this episode is titled “Fortress Bricks.” As the season progresses, it seems the naming conventions are becoming increasingly unimaginative, with this episode being referred to as “The Epoch of New Locations.

At the outset, T.J. informs Cara Maria that she carries a significant three-minute penalty, the maximum one yet given to anyone who lost earlier. Moreover, she’s marked as a key target this week alongside competitors Jenny and Rachel. As a result, there’s no margin for error on her part.

Tori plans to conserve her energy because she just needs to avoid coming in last, which shouldn’t be difficult given that Michele is struggling significantly on the course, with all the women passing her repeatedly, as if they’re carrying lightweight items like cotton candy rather than heavy objects like bricks. On the other hand, Kyland and Jordan are closely watching each other, both aware of the other’s progression, as they consider each other their main competitors.

In my opinion, as a movie reviewer, I must say that Kyland was the first to successfully navigate all the obstacles up to the fortress, but he stumbled on the puzzle – one might argue it wasn’t particularly complex. This gave Jordan an opportunity to capitalize on Kyland’s momentary lapse and snatch victory from under his nose. Interestingly, this scenario could hint at how the final round may unfold – although Kyland has a physical advantage due to his youthful agility, Jordan has been in the game for a decade and possesses the wisdom and experience necessary to spot crucial details.

Jenny wins for the women, despite an asthma moment, and successfully removes herself from the target equation, securing her spot in the Final. Cara is right behind her, but when you’re a target, second is the first to lose, as Abby Lee Miller would say. It all comes down to a puzzle dogfight between Tori and Michele. Tori evidently took the race a little too easy because there’s no reason she should have left such little room between herself and Michele. Like Jordan, Michele is able to lock in on the puzzle, saving herself from the arena with seconds to spare.

The responsibility lies with Jordan to decide who will compete against his trusted ally Tori in the upcoming contest. In a surprising move, T.J. steps into the spotlight within the chamber, explaining that Jordan needs to make his decisive choice that very evening. It’s a tough predicament for Jordan – earlier in the season, he and Rachel had made an agreement to be each other’s second-in-commands, but with the game nearing its end, how significant is that promise? Following the women’s heartfelt appeals, he shares with Cara that witnessing their hostility subsiding and forming a friendship was his favorite aspect of this season. One might wonder if there were any signs of this amicable bond in these 90-minute episodes??!!

In the end, Jordan chooses to uphold his promise to Rachel by sending Cara instead; friendship has its limits. T.J. instructs everyone to show up at tomorrow’s elimination wearing their Challenge attire and punctuality is a must. A laugh, as if they are responsible for hailing their own taxi service.

The group navigates a motorboat towards a colossal, weathered pirate ship in the heart of the ocean, eerily reminiscent of the Flying Dutchman from SpongeBob SquarePants, named Sinister. T.J. informs them that this will serve as their residence during the Final. However, before settling in, either Cara or Tori must successfully pass the final elimination round. Care to hazard a guess as to what it’s called? “The Ultimate Showdown” could be an alternative phrase for “The Final Elimination.

Cara and Tori must keep themselves afloat for as long as possible until they either tire or sink. A sense of despair seems to overtake Cara when it’s evident that this is going to be a swimming test. It falls short of expectations, considering the buildup was for an exciting face-off between two prominent figures in their respective franchises. If you imagine Tatum and Luka competing in a live Netflix event, but instead of playing basketball, they simply stare at each other, that’s the feeling here.

It’s quite an unusual elimination to observe, with only two individuals floating silently on their backs in the dark. Soft, comical music even begins to play in the background. The girls seem to be getting overrun by plankton, making their hands look like they could give prunes a run for their money, and a snake seems to be swimming in circles around them.

In two hours, T.J. realizes it’s time to end the game and watch the latest episode of Landman. In the next part of the contest, players must keep their arms out of the water and use only their legs to float. Cara becomes anxious, splashing around wildly, while Tori, who is also finding it tough, manages to keep a cool exterior, believing that appearing strong will speed up Cara’s downfall. Bananas reminds Cara of his advice from Sinister, urging her to concentrate on herself and not focus on Tori. In her private thoughts, Cara clarifies that Bananas isn’t supporting her; he’s working against Tori, so viewers shouldn’t see him as a good person. Similarly, by backing Cara, I personally oppose Laurel, who is no longer in the game.

In about twenty more minutes, T.J. instructs the women to withdraw their elbows from the water, making them unsteady. Despite her best attempts, Cara finally lets go, signaling the conclusion of the competition as well as her journey. While I’m not overly fond of Cara, I had hoped she would reach the Final in her debut return, serving as a fitting finale to the storyline “Cara has reconnected with others and is enjoying competing once more.

As T.J. leaves, she asks Cara to complete her Karma Points survey and then transfers them all to Rachel – quite unexpectedly. I find myself bracing myself for intense anger when the outcome of the Final seems suspiciously manipulated, akin to a cheated arcade claw machine. Tune in next week to see my emotional turmoil unfold.
