The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras Finale Recap: Nice Guys Finish First

As a cinephile, I find myself right back where we last parted, delving into the murky underbelly of the chilling “Sinister” film, watching our protagonists’ mental and physical states deteriorate. Amidst a frenzy reminiscent of the Incredible Hulk, Jenny succumbs to an emotional breakdown around 1 a.m., scattering the remaining coins into her collection box with reckless abandon. She retires for the night on the unforgiving cold metal floor, soothed by the haunting “Show me the way to go home” lullaby sung by the rest of the cast in their ghostly harmonies.

After most people had finished the game and were winding down, I still found myself with more than half of my bag left. Instead of making an educated guess to get a good night’s sleep, I felt the pressure from my less-than-ideal performance in the first day’s checkpoints. Determined to show improvement, I channeled the energy of an ASSSSCAT performer who hears a WME agent’s son is in the audience. At 4 a.m., I even sang with some classy vibrato trills, adding a touch of elegance – perhaps that deserves some Karma Points, considering we’re judging this Final based on seemingly insignificant information?

As the sun rises, I stir my cast awake, donning a stylish black button-down shirt – a favorite of mine from my past dating days. Today, I bring news that reflects our hard work and perseverance. Unfortunately, Tori’s efforts resulted in an oversight, as she miscounted her coins by nearly a thousand, placing her last. Meanwhile, Bananas finds himself in fourth place. With Derek securing the first-place victory, there’s no margin for error if he aims to reclaim the second spot.

4th Contest Outcome: First Position, Derek and Rachel; Second Position, Jordan and Michele; Third Position, Kyland and Jenny; Fourth Position, Bananas and Tori

Or simply:

Contest Results IV: 1st – Derek & Rachel, 2nd – Jordan & Michele, 3rd – Kyland & Jenny, 4th – Bananas & Tori.

On the second day, the initial milestone is named “Drowning Fear,” which is also the catchphrase for an upcoming Blumhouse movie centering around a zombie outbreak on a military submersible. Wow, that sounds intriguing! Could I be a movie connoisseur?

The team members should make their way to a different spot, retrieve a paddle there, and then swim towards a huge raft. Beneath this raft are containers that contain the keys they require to open the boats, which will ferry them back to the Sinister. It seems like yesterday’s exertion had little effect on Jordan’s physical condition, as he swam with ease once more, reminiscent of the offspring of a human and Lola, the seductive Angelina Jolie-like fish from Shark Tale.

After reaching the raft, he pauses to regain his breath, allowing others to potentially close the gap. Despite being the first to open his boat, he’s worried that Bananas or Derek might capitalize on this instance to gain an advantage because it’s harder to row effectively with only one hand. However, neither of them does, and Jordan’s “Operation: Avoid The Karma Vote” continues unabated.

Initially ahead, Michele struggles to find her key, leaving her exhausted from swimming. Too drained to get out of the water herself, she’d likely remain there indefinitely if not for Kyland, who allows her to climb onto him as a means of reaching the raft. Displaying graciousness and sportsmanship despite his lack of significance at this point in the game, Kyland comments that “there’s no substitute for experience.” Admittedly, some swimming instruction wouldn’t have gone amiss.

1st Position: Jordan & Jenny; 2nd Position: Derek & Tori; 3rd Position: Bananas & Rachel; 4th Position: Kyland & Michele – This version maintains the original structure but uses a more conversational tone to make it easier to read.

Afterward, the players proceed to an area called “Mathematical Leisure.” Here, they tackle elementary math problems on a sandbar as they sip coconut water. The order in which they arrive determines their seating arrangement, with two players facing each other. They call out the solution to a simple equation such as 10 – 8 + 2. The first one to provide the correct answer gets to swim back to the “Sinister,” while the loser must keep competing until they manage to win. The last player on the sandbar can’t start their return until the person who defeated them reaches the “Sinister.” Essentially, this means a last-place finish is almost certain unless someone requires medical assistance during the game.

These mathematical problems are straightforward enough that I’ve been solving them effortlessly, as I haven’t delved into math beyond Algebra II. In fact, they’re so simple, it seems unnecessary for them to even pull out their chalkboards. And let me tell you, Jenny is clearly outperforming Michele in this realm.

Michele persistently follows L after L, much like a contestant on Jeopardy! who possesses the correct answers but struggles to activate the buzzer. Every female participant overtakes her. Desperate to win, she attempts to charm Derek with her feminine charms, unaware of his sexual orientation. However, her efforts prove futile as she eventually edges past Bananas by a narrow margin. This is unfortunate for Bananas because his last opponent before the final round is Kyland, known as ‘The Calculator’.

As a thrilled spectator, I’m excited to share the results from Checkpoint VI! In first place, it’s the dynamic duo, Jordan and Jenny, who truly shone! Following closely in second, we have Derek and Michele who gave us quite a run for our money. Kyland and Rachel claimed third place, while Bananas and Tori held down fourth. What an incredible competition!

As I approach the final challenge, it’s a close race for second place, much like watching Simone Biles perform her breathtaking Yurchenko double-pike at the Olympics. The competition is called “Champion’s Cove,” where participants will navigate underwater scooters to retrieve a token from a cave and zoom back one last time. It seems a bit underwhelming as a finale, but it looks like something you might pay for at a luxurious Hawaiian resort. Jenny is struggling to master the use of her scooter, which could provide Michele with an opportunity to secure first place and gain some well-deserved redemption.

7th Checkpoint Outcomes: First Position shared by Jordan and Michele; Second Position taken by Bananas and Rachel; Third Position claimed by Derek and Tori; Fourth Position occupied by Kyland and Jenny.

The finalists express their camaraderie after a deeply unpleasant experience, forming memories that will last a lifetime and perhaps some unforgettable emotional ties. In the end, T.J. discloses the evaluation methodology and explains how those dreadful Karma Votes can impact the scores. Each milestone was worth up to four points based on one’s standing, and the Karma Vote accounted for a maximum of eight additional bonus points, enhancing the total score.

I begin by discussing the scores of my fellow competitors, who, unlike Lady Luck’s favorites, relied solely on their skills. In a well-deserved victory, Jordan clinched first place (I must acknowledge that I predicted this six weeks ago and am proud of my foresight). Derek, who decided to part ways with his layup nickname, took second place. Grandpa Bananas managed to escape total humiliation by grabbing the bronze medal, while sweet Kyland was simply elated that he didn’t end up underwater.

Contrarily for the women, things seem tough as they’re dominated by the Karma Votes. Except for Tori, everyone else seems predestined to lose. If we consider the actual points, Jenny would have led with 22 points, followed closely by Michele with 19 points and Rachel with 16 points. However, due to Rachel’s extensive relationships from previous seasons (earning her 8 Karma Points), she unexpectedly ties for first place with Jenny. Despite beating Rachel significantly, Michele ends up in third place, just one point shy of a three-way tie for the top spot.

The season’s conclusion is quite disheartening. Michele appears dejected, as if she had just stumbled upon Devin kissing Olivia. It’s hard to enjoy a victory when it’s based on empty tactics, Derek makes this clear by stating he’s happy to have surpassed Bananas due to his performance, not because of his drag shows and birthday cakes. Nobody desires a win with an asterisk. I hope Jordan and Jenny, the genuine winners, utilize the prize money to pursue their ambitions. Jordan aims to become an F1 racer, while Jenny intends to fund and star in the live-action adaptation of Wreck It Ralph.
