Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Chair Company’s season 1 finale.
I just finished the first season of The Chair Company and wow, it was a ride! It finally gave us some answers to things that had been building up, but honestly, it left me with even more questions. Created by Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin for HBO, the show is such a unique mix of hilariously awkward moments and a genuinely intriguing conspiracy. It’s weirdly compelling to see big issues like corporate wrongdoing and political corruption mixed with just… really uncomfortable, everyday stuff. I can’t wait to see where they take it next!
Like Robinson and Kanin’s previous show, I Think You Should Leave, The Chair Company is hilarious and unpredictable. However, it also features a surprisingly engaging mystery that drives the story forward. It’s almost as if they took an I Think You Should Leave sketch and expanded it into a full eight-episode thriller, starting with a classic, funny setup.
The series begins with Ron Trosper, a newly appointed project manager at Fisher Robay, experiencing a mortifying moment: he falls out of his chair in front of all his employees. Determined to find out who made the faulty chair, Ron stumbles upon a much larger and unexpected conspiracy.
Throughout the series, Ron discovers that Tecca has been refurbishing old chairs and selling them as new. However, the money Alice Quintana stole from this scheme was invested in Ron’s wife Barb’s business. This means if Ron reveals what he knows, he’ll ruin Barb’s company, so he reluctantly decides to stay silent.
Why Ron Decides To Reopen His Investigation Into Tecca
During the first part of the season finale, Ron remains determined to end the investigation and protect Alice’s secrets. He prioritizes saving his job at Fisher Robay, completely setting aside the chair company case. He attempts to leak the information to a newspaper without revealing his identity, but quickly abandons the idea, fearing he could still be discovered.
Later in the episode, he unexpectedly finds new clues that lead him to revisit the Tecca case. This discovery, along with finding out his boss, Jeff, is connected and that the mysterious caller isn’t linked to Alice, makes him understand the situation is far more complex than he initially believed.
Who Is Stacy Crystals?
The finale begins with a scene of a father at his daughter’s wedding. After drinking too much and smoking several cigars, he almost falls over while dancing with his daughter. When the bartender stops serving him, another guest offers him a drink, and the two men start a conversation.
The man, who introduced himself as Stacy Crystals, said he was a powerful Hollywood producer. He tricked the bride’s father into believing he had pop star potential, like Sabrina Carpenter, and urged him to follow up. As Stacy walked away, he phoned a colleague, hinting the whole situation was a fraud – which wasn’t a surprise. But then, someone shot and killed him.
A young boy confronts Stacy, accusing him of ruining his father’s life, and then shoots and kills him with a handgun made from a 3D printer. At first, the reader doesn’t know who Stacy is, but Ron discovers a photo showing Stacy with Jeff in Jeff’s office. Jeff is deeply upset when he learns about Stacy’s death, suggesting they were business partners.
It seems Stacy used the same trick on this boy’s father that he was attempting at the wedding – pretending to be a record producer. He convinces people they’re talented and have what it takes to succeed in music, then swindles them out of their money, effectively ruining their lives. This is what happened to the boy’s father.
Jeff Was The Big Bad All Along
A few episodes back, Ron pushed Jeff during an argument with a group of toy car collectors at the construction site. This led to Ron being temporarily suspended from his job while Fisher Robay decided how to handle the situation. Later, after Jeff’s pride was hurt, he asked Ron to meet him at a karaoke bar to try and resolve their issues over drinks.
I couldn’t believe it when Jeff was playing some of his recordings for Ron, and one of the songs turned out to be exactly the same as the hold music from Red Ball Market Global! Seriously, Ron recognized it instantly – he’d heard it for hours! He immediately ran over to Fisher Robay, and Jeff’s office was packed with evidence tying him to both Tecca and Stacy Crystals. It was a total shock, but it turned out Jeff was the mastermind behind everything all along!
Mike’s “Family” Explained
All season, Mike has mentioned wanting to reconnect with his family, particularly his daughter Lynette, and apologizing for things he’s done wrong, but he’s never been clear about what those things were. The season finale shockingly reveals that the people he’s been pursuing aren’t actually his relatives. He’s been stalking and harassing the family of the man whose heart he received in a transplant.
The family asked Mike to escort Lynette down the aisle, hoping to honor her father’s memory, but he acted strangely. He clung to Lynette’s mother, insisting he was her husband, and then attempted to kiss Lynette. Ultimately, the family had to get a restraining order against him. He isn’t someone who’s fallen from grace; he’s simply a solitary and eccentric person.
Who Was The Masked Man On Ron’s Security Camera?
In the third episode, Ron was startled to find a man wearing a Jason Voorhees mask sitting in his backyard, watching the security camera he’d just installed. The season finale revealed this man was actually Amanda, Ron’s co-worker’s, boyfriend – and the source of the harassing phone calls Ron had been receiving.
Who Is The Man In Mike’s Bathtub?
A particularly unsettling scene in the finale shows Mike sitting in his apartment looking cold and detached. The camera then reveals he’s holding the man who was so eager to use Mayor Braccon’s hot tub earlier in the season, and has tied him up in the bathtub.
Ron asked Mike to go to a public appearance by Braccon at a bar and to make sure the mayor stayed there until Ron could arrive. Ron intended to confront Braccon, but he never made it. Later, Mike revealed to Ron that after Ron stopped responding to his messages, he had to take extreme steps to ensure Braccon remained at the bar.
This quick scene reveals Mike has kidnapped the man who was determined to use Braccon’s hot tub and is currently holding him captive in the bathroom. It’s darkly funny that the man who relentlessly wanted to enjoy the mayor’s hot tub is now stuck in a bathtub himself, possibly for a long time.
Did Amanda Really Break Ron’s Chair With Telekinesis?
In the first episode of the show, Ron’s chair unexpectedly broke, causing him to fall and end up in an awkward position at Amanda’s feet – it looked like he was looking up her skirt. He’s been working with HR ever since to clarify it was a complete accident and not intentional.
The HR investigation showed Ron and Amanda knew each other from high school – they even performed in a play together. At the end of the first season, Ron finally meets the person who’s been calling him, and discovers it’s Amanda’s boyfriend. He learns that Amanda has held a grudge against Ron since a humiliating incident in high school, and everything that’s happened has been her plan for getting back at him.
The story in The Chair Company takes a strange turn when Amanda’s boyfriend suggests she broke a chair using her mind. He claims she has telekinetic abilities – the power to move things with her thoughts – and can even destroy objects when she’s very upset. However, the question remains: did Amanda really break the chair with her mind?
Honestly, the show’s explanation feels really shaky. It comes from this guy who supposedly knows Amanda, but we’ve never even seen him with her, and he comes across as totally unstable. It makes me wonder if the show is doing something like The Curse, and is going to end the season with a genuinely supernatural twist. Maybe that’s where things are headed with The Chair Company.
How The Chair Company’s Finale Sets Up Season 2
HBO recently announced a second season of The Chair Company, so fans don’t need to worry about loose ends from the first season’s finale – those questions will be addressed. The finale also laid the groundwork for what’s to come in season two, giving us some clues about the new storylines.
Season 2 will likely reveal the identity of Stacy Crystals and how he was connected to Jeff. It will also continue to develop the growing conflict between Jeff and Ron. Now that Ron knows Jeff is involved in a corporate conspiracy, he has something he can use to his advantage – possibly to get his job back at Fisher Robay, or even earn a promotion.
As a huge fan of The Chair Company, I’m really excited about season two! The big question hanging over everything is whether they’re going to fully embrace the supernatural side of things and admit Amanda really does have telekinesis. Or, will they try to come up with a logical explanation for what her ex said? Honestly, either way, I’m expecting another season of seriously captivating TV.
