The first season of HBO’s The Chair Company finally addressed the mystery surrounding Ron’s storyline, but left viewers puzzled about the true nature of Tecca, RBMG, and the other secretive companies that captivated Tim Robinson’s character. The finale also didn’t reveal what Jim Downey’s Douglas ate to survive being trapped under his refrigerator.
I didn’t think we’d ever see it, but the show considered a scene where Douglas is stuck under a large appliance – initially imagined as a sad moment, but later envisioned as comedic. Ashley Connor, the cinematographer for The Chair Company, told TheContending.com that Jim Downey, a veteran from Saturday Night Live, was a valuable asset to the production. She explained why that scene of Douglas on the kitchen floor ultimately didn’t make it into the show.
Jim was amazing in every scene he was in – he consistently delivered fantastic performances that had everyone in stitches. He really understood how to deliver his lines. It’s incredible considering he was a supporting character. The director decided against filming a scene showing under the fridge because it would have shifted the focus away from the main character’s point of view. But whenever Douglas talked about being under the fridge, I had so many great takes to choose from! We were all laughing hysterically behind the camera.
Douglas is hilarious whenever he talks about The Chair Company. The way he delivers his lines and chooses his words is perfect. Honestly, the confidence he has while telling Ron he’s going to dress as a chicken to boost office spirits is more impressive than anything I usually say – maybe even more than telling my wife and kids I love them! If I put in any more effort, my daughter would probably tell me to stop trying to be someone I’m not, and I’d probably listen.

Douglas explained what happened when he got back to the office, detailing scenes that, unfortunately, will likely only exist in that incomplete fan fiction I have saved on my computer.
It’s amazing to be back with everyone. There were moments I honestly didn’t think I’d survive. Thankfully, I managed to shelter under a refrigerator, which allowed me to reach food in the freezer. I couldn’t be choosy – I just grabbed whatever was within reach. But I made it through, even though I couldn’t select what I ate.
Douglas, Hero In The Flesh
One of my favorite lines from the first season of The Chair is definitely “Even though I couldn’t pick.” It’s right up there with gems like “My God, they stack the turkey,” and “I swear, I have the worst pillow in town!” What makes it so good isn’t just the humor—it perfectly shows Douglas’s character. It tells you he’s the type of person who would refuse lukewarm water even when desperately thirsty, all while trying to gain sympathy.

It would have been fascinating to see footage of Douglas’ life after the events of 127 Hours. We could have learned so much about his reflections – would he have questioned his decisions leading up to the ordeal? Would he have wished he’d taken even bigger risks? Or would he simply have been enjoying some comfort food, like fish sticks? A short scene at Douglas’ home could have given characters like Ashley Connor those answers.
I get where they’re coming from, and honestly, I mostly agree. Shifting focus to Douglas at all during the last part of the season would have really derailed Ron’s already intense storyline. And you know, this show feels all over the place, but it’s actually got this cool, old-school ’70s thriller vibe to its pacing. We did get glimpses into Mike’s…unique interests – let’s just say Christmas and kidnapping were both involved – but his stuff is going to directly impact Ron in a way that whatever Douglas was up to just won’t. Or at least, that’s what it seems like…unless there’s more to it than meets the eye.
Season 2 will likely explore that further. In the meantime, viewers who want to solve the mystery can revisit Season 1 on HBO Max, carefully re-examining the clues until they feel like a detective themselves.
