In the heart of the movie “Jimpa,” directed by Sophie Hyde and debuting at Sundance, lies the theme of queer happiness, a subject deeply appreciated by the film’s creators. Given the sermon delivered during Donald Trump’s inauguration by DC Bishop Mariann Budde, calling for empathy towards LGBTQ+ individuals and marginalized groups, the cast, together with Hyde, emphasize the relevance of their narrative at this particular moment in time. Aud Mason-Hyde, one of the cast members, shared her sentiments about this timely event with Jay Jurden at Sundance’s Vulture Spot: “I thought that moment was beautiful,” she said. “If we can find love, if we can find joy, that’s all we need.
In the film, Jimpa (John Lithgow) accompanies Hannah (Olivia Colman) and their non-binary teenager Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde) on a journey to the Netherlands to meet Hannah’s father and Frances’s grandfather. When Frances expresses a desire to live with him for a year, Hannah begins to reconsider her parenting methods and the nature of their relationship. The story is inspired by Hyde’s real family, as she described it as centering around joy, reflecting her openly gay father and transgender/nonbinary child. Lithgow, who portrays Hyde’s father, mentioned during production that they hadn’t anticipated how relevant the film would become at Sundance. “As we were making the movie,” he said, “we didn’t realize how crucial it would be in this specific moment.” He further explained that, although there had been progress and acceptance for years regarding these issues, a sudden wave of intolerance has emerged, leaving him astonished.
Colman, portraying the character Hannah, modeled after Hyde, wished that the movie might shift someone’s viewpoint: “Hostility and suspicion are often rooted in ignorance. Perhaps, if anyone could see the film and think, ‘I understand now. I’m not alarmed by this.’ This is simply about love; just people expressing affection for others.
