The Brutalist Used AI to Fix Leads’ Hungarian Accents, Says Editor

It seems that an accent coach on YouTube may soon find their services less in demand, as reported by Dávid Jancsó, the editor of a recent film. In this movie, AI tools were used to refine the Hungarian pronunciation of stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones. Jancsó explained to tech magazine Red Shark News that certain sounds can be challenging for actors coming from an Anglo-Saxon background. Initially, they attempted to overdub these difficult sounds with the actors themselves, but this approach didn’t yield satisfactory results. They then tried replacing the problematic sounds entirely with other actors’ voices, but this didn’t work either. Ultimately, they sought alternative methods to improve the pronunciation. Additionally, the film employed generative AI to create some of László Tóth’s drawings and structures at the Venice Biennale.

Instead of relying solely on human effort by “working harder” (AH), Janscó pointed out the benefits of using AI. He noted that Hungarian, being one of the most challenging languages to pronounce, required additional help even for Brody, who has a Hungarian mother. Janscó and his team trained the AI to speak Hungarian flawlessly, aiming to ensure that the AI’s pronunciation was indistinguishable from native speakers’. In comparison to manual adjustments made by human sound engineers in ProTools, Janscó suggested that using AI helped expedite the process significantly due to the large amount of Hungarian dialogue they had to work with.
