‘The Brutalist’ Director Brady Corbet Says Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones’ ‘Performances Are Completely Their Own’ Amid AI Dialogue Backlash

In response to criticism, film director Brady Corbet has justified his incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) in the movie “The Brutalist”. This decision has stirred controversy due to AI being employed to modify Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones’ Hungarian accents, as well as generate certain visual elements in the final scenes.

According to Corbet, both Adrien and Felicity’s acting styles are uniquely their own. They spent months working under dialect coach Tanera Marshall to ensure their accents were spot-on. The unique Respeecher technology was employed in editing only the Hungarian dialogues, focusing on fine-tuning specific vowels and letters for precision. No adjustments were made to the English dialogues. This painstaking process was carried out by our sound team along with Respeecher during post-production. The intention behind this was to maintain the authenticity of Adrien and Felicity’s performances in Hungarian, rather than altering or replacing them, and this was done with great respect for their craftsmanship.

He went on to explain that Judy Becker and her colleagues did not employ AI to construct or depict any of the buildings. Instead, all images were sketched by artists manually. For more clarity, it’s important to note that in the memorial video displayed in the background scene, our editorial team crafted images deliberately made to resemble low-quality digital renderings from around 1980.

Corbet concluded by expressing that the movie titled ‘The Brutalist’ explores the intricacies of human nature, with each part meticulously crafted through human energy, ingenuity, and teamwork. We are immensely proud of our crew for their remarkable achievements on this project.

The events unfolded following editor David Jancso’s disclosure that AI was employed to enhance the authenticity of Brody and Jones’ Hungarian accents, as well as to generate a series of architectural sketches and completed structures for the movie’s climactic scene.

Jancsó emphasized the importance of having an open dialogue about the tools AI can offer us. The film doesn’t feature anything new using AI, but it significantly speeds up the process. We employ AI to add intricate details that we couldn’t afford or find time to capture on camera otherwise.
