Good news for anime collectors! Mamoru Hosoda’s The Boy and the Beast is coming to 4K Blu-ray later this year. It’s currently priced at $37, with a standard Blu-ray version available for $27. The film is a heartwarming story about a mentor and his apprentice who team up to fight a dangerous enemy, and will be available exclusively on Amazon.
The Boy and the Beast, which came out in 2015, follows Kyuta, a young boy living on the streets of Shibuya. He’s taken under the wing of Kumatetsu, a tough warrior from the Beast Kingdom who needs an apprentice. Though they argue at first, Kyuta and Kumatetsu quickly become close while training and learn a lot from each other. Their relationship is truly tested when a dangerous threat emerges, putting the entire world at risk.
The movie was a commercial success and only the second film made by Hosoda’s new animation studio, Studio Chizu. Most of Hosoda’s other films are now available in high-quality 4K steelbook editions, and they’re currently available at a great price. His breakthrough film, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, is a moving story about time travel and growing up, and you can get it for $34 (originally $37).
Mamoru Hosoda’s films explore diverse themes. His 2009 movie, Summer Wars, features a story about artificial intelligence and complicated relationships. Wolf Children (2012) is a touching story about a mother raising her two half-wolf children after the death of their father. Following The Boy and the Beast, Hosoda continued to direct acclaimed films like Mirai and Belle, with his most recent work, the historical fantasy Scarlet, released in November 2025.
