The Bloodiest and Horniest TV Show Ever Made Spartacus: House of Ashur Is Suddenly a Streaming Hit

Nearly two months after it first aired, the incredibly violent and explicit show continues to be a major success on streaming platforms. While the Spartacus spin-off has generally received positive reviews, it hasn’t been without some criticism.

Despite nearing its season finale on January 30th, Spartacus: House of Ashur remains popular with viewers. The series recently released Episode 8, titled “Horizons,” which is the second-to-last episode of the first season. According to FlixPatrol, Spartacus: House of Ashur has climbed back to the top of the charts on Starz.

The show reached the top of Amazon Channels’ overall charts, moving up five spots since January 23rd. It continues to be a popular choice on TV charts, currently holding steady at number four in the U.S.

The violent historical drama is proving popular around the globe. In the U.K., it’s the second most-watched show on MGM+, trailing only Power Book IV: Force. It holds the same position on Stan in Australia and appears in the Top 10 on Prime Video across multiple European countries.

This new series is both a continuation and a spin-off of Spartacus, surprisingly bringing back the character of Ashur, played by Nick E. Tarabay, even though he died in the original show. Fans will recall Ashur was killed and beheaded on Mount Vesuvius by Naevia. The new series rewrites that history, placing him in an alternate timeline where he survives and becomes the owner of a gladiator school.

The new series, Spartacus: House of Ashur, imagines what would happen if Ashur lived through the events of Vengeance and was given control of the gladiator school. It charts his journey to becoming a powerful “Dominus” – a gladiator trainer – within the violent world of Roman combat, and the unlikely ally who helps him get there.

Like the original Spartacus series, the show remains very violent, and that will continue through the final episode. The next episode will see Caesar forcing Ashur to make a difficult and agonizing choice, following a brutal death that occurred in the previous episode.

Spartacus: House of Ashur Received Criticism for Being ‘Woke’

Critics generally loved Spartacus: House of Ashur, just as they did the original Spartacus series. It earned a very high 92% approval rating based on 12 reviews, with praise directed at its story, exciting action, and intense violence.

Viewers reacted negatively to the show, particularly to the introduction of a female gladiator, which some felt was a forced attempt at modern social commentary. Critics have echoed this sentiment, with one Rotten Tomatoes review stating they prioritize ‘wokeness’ over quality storytelling. Another review called the series ‘horrible woke garbage,’ criticizing it for sacrificing good acting and narrative in favor of being overly feminist.

Many viewers loved the series, with some calling it one of the best they’d seen in years and giving it a perfect score of 10 out of 10.

Spartacus: House of Ashur debuts its Season 1 finale on Jan. 30 on Starz.
