The Big Bang Theory’s Co-Creator Reveals The Show’s Original Name, And How It ‘Lasted For About Five Minutes’

The popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory followed a group of socially awkward physicists whose lives were turned upside down when a charming neighbor moved in next door. Though the show ended six years ago, fans still fondly remember its sweet and unexpected finale. Interestingly, the show almost had a different title, but thankfully, the co-creator quickly decided against it, saying the alternative “lasted about five minutes.”

It’s difficult to picture The Big Bang Theory with any other title. A different name would have meant a completely different theme song, likely not by the Barenaked Ladies. According to Bill Prady, one of the show’s creators, as revealed in Jessica Radloff’s book “The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series” (reported by TVLine), they considered a different original title – and thankfully, they decided against it.

The show originally went by the working title ‘Lenny, Penny, and Kenny.’ Lenny was intended to be the character who became Leonard, and Kenny was the basis for Sheldon. That title didn’t stick for long – only about five minutes, actually! It’s even still listed that way in my contract: ‘Lenny, Penny, and Kenny’ – also known as ‘The Big Bang Theory.’

Wow, that’s a really interesting point! Honestly, a title like “Lenny, Penny, and Kenny” feels a bit too much like a cartoon, doesn’t it? If we’re aiming for something broader, something that’ll appeal to more than just kids, we need a title that’s clever and hints at the bigger themes – the challenges of being a scientist and a person, you know? It needs to be more sophisticated than something a show like Hiller and Diller could’ve ever pulled off. We’re dealing with deeper stuff here!

Originally, Jessica Radoff writes, the show was intended to focus on computer programmers. However, after learning about physicist Richard Feynman, the creators decided to make the characters more like good-natured, socially awkward geniuses. They came up with the title “The Big Bang Theory” while looking through science terms – it’s a concept everyone in science knows, but no one can fully explain.

Interesting facts about the making of The Big Bang Theory show that the show went through several changes before becoming what we know today. The first pilot episode was a disaster, according to creator Chuck Lorre. The characters Raj, Howard, and Penny hadn’t been developed yet, and the writers hadn’t figured out who the female lead should be or how she would fit into Leonard and Sheldon’s lives. It was a typical challenge for a new show – they just hadn’t gotten to know the characters well enough yet.

The show’s first neighbor, Katie, didn’t quite fit the image the network was looking for. Kaley Cuoco, initially passed over for the role of Penny because she seemed too young, ultimately proved to be the perfect addition, helping Leonard and Sheldon come out of their comfort zones and grow as characters.

Thankfully, they didn’t go with the name “Lenny, Penny, and Kenny” for the show! It would have been really repetitive to say that all the time. And that would have meant the spin-off would have been called Young Kenny. You can enjoy the show, properly named The Big Bang Theory, now on Max.
