The Best Directors of the 21st Century (So Far)

As a movie fan, it’s amazing to think about how the 20th century passed, leaving the stage open for a new generation of filmmakers. The classic Hollywood era created such incredible, legendary movies – directors like Scorsese, Coppola, Kubrick, Lucas, Cameron, and Carpenter really set the standard. It felt like anyone coming along in the 21st century had a lot to live up to, trying to follow in those footsteps!

Today, it’s rare for movie studios to take risks on completely original ideas, with most films being sequels, remakes, or adaptations. However, despite this trend, some of the most memorable and impactful movies of all time have been created since 2000 by incredibly talented filmmakers. While many of these directors began their careers in the late 1990s, they truly flourished and produced their finest work in the 21st century.

The following filmmakers are celebrated for creating some of the most captivating, visually beautiful, and intellectually stimulating films ever made, truly changing what cinema can be.

Edgar Wright

Edgar Wright, the director known for the beloved Cornetto Trilogy, is a huge film buff. He brilliantly uses his vast knowledge of movies in his work as both a writer and director. He started his career with the comedy A Fistful of Fingers, but became famous for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, released in 2004 and 2007. Since then, he’s created other popular films like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Baby Driver, and even explored the horror genre with Last Night in Soho.

Edgar Wright has evolved from a beloved, but relatively unknown, British director who blended comedy with different genres into a major filmmaking presence. He’s known for his distinctive style and creative vision – so much so that he walked away from directing Ant-Man when he realized Marvel wasn’t interested in letting him make the film he wanted. While Baby Driver was his most commercially successful film, his earlier work – including the Cornetto trilogy and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World – are now considered modern classics. These films not only featured talented actors who later became stars, but also influenced a new wave of filmmakers with their innovative editing and fast-paced storytelling.

Yorgos Lanthimos

Yorgos Lanthimos, a Greek director, is widely considered one of the most creatively daring filmmakers of the 21st century. Known for his unconventional style, he’s created some of the most original films of the past two decades. After gaining recognition for Dogtooth, Lanthimos began directing in English with The Lobster and has consistently explored themes like flawed societies, the difficulties of connecting with others, and the nature of love.

Lanthimos films his movies using a striking and broad visual style, often with very wide shots and occasionally a distorted, fish-eye effect. His filmmaking approach is instantly recognizable, more so than the other directors here, and he uses these unusual angles to create a deliberately unsettling feeling that reflects the bleak, futuristic worlds he depicts. He’s consistently received praise from critics and industry recognition, including the Best Actress Oscar for Olivia Colman in 2019’s The Favourite, and 11 Academy Award nominations for 2023’s Poor Things. His recent science fiction thriller, Bugonia, also garnered four nominations, proving his consistent critical success.

Chloé Zhao

I’ve been following Chloé Zhao’s work since her first film, Songs My Brothers Taught Me came out in 2015, and she quickly became one of my favorite filmmakers. Her follow-up, The Rider, was incredible, and then she took on Eternals for Marvel. Because of some delays with Eternals, she was able to make Nomadland as well, which was a huge success – it actually won Best Picture at the Oscars in 2021, and Zhao herself won Best Director! That was a really big deal, making her only the second woman to ever win that award. While Eternals didn’t quite hit the mark for some people, it definitely stood out from the usual Marvel fare.

Chloé Zhao’s films consistently find beauty in the ordinary. She’s known for using non-actors in films like Songs My Brothers Taught Me and The Rider, and even her large-scale Marvel film, Eternals, centers on the wonder of humanity and everyday life. Her work explores human connection and the potential for extraordinary moments in the mundane. Zhao is also set to direct an adaptation of Hamnet, a story imagining the grief of William Shakespeare and his wife after the death of their son at age eleven, in 1596.

Alfonso Cuarón

Alfonso Cuarón is a remarkably versatile director, capable of excelling in any genre or style. His filmography showcases this talent, with standout movies like the 2001 road trip film Y tu mamá también, the 2004 fantasy adventure Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the 2006 dystopian thriller Children of Men, and the 2013 space drama Gravity. In 2018, Cuarón returned to his roots with Roma, a deeply personal and beautifully shot black-and-white film. This passion project garnered widespread critical praise and earned him four Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film.

Alfonso Cuarón is known for his stunning visuals, using beautiful camera work, extended shots, and incredibly detailed scenes to create immersive worlds. He’s a skilled director who can capture genuine emotion in even the briefest moments. Cuarón has a unique ability to draw audiences into both original films like Gravity – which became a huge commercial success – and foreign-language films like Roma, even when they require reading subtitles. He’s achieved mainstream success without compromising his artistic vision.

Lars Von Trier

Lars von Trier is a Danish filmmaker with a career spanning over four decades, though some of his most significant work has come in the last 20 years. He’s celebrated – and sometimes controversial – for creating films that are bold, thought-provoking, and break from typical narrative structures. His work frequently explores difficult and sensitive topics like depression, addiction, and mental health.

Lars von Trier is a director who often shows intense and realistic human suffering in his films, which has led to both praise and controversy among other filmmakers. He’s celebrated for his inventive camera work and his bold approach to storytelling, often pushing boundaries to create a strong emotional impact on viewers. This unique style is evident in films like Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 and 2, Melancholia, and The House That Jack Built.

Denis Villeneuve

Denis Villeneuve is now considered one of the leading filmmakers of today. He’s known for building intense, suspenseful movies with a distinct, atmospheric style and characters who are often mysterious. Villeneuve excels at creating captivating and unforgettable worlds that truly pull viewers into the story. He skillfully combines different genres—like drama, thriller, and science fiction—to create films that are both exciting and make you think. His work frequently tackles big questions about who we are, how we remember things, and what’s right and wrong, encouraging audiences to reflect on the world around them.

Denis Villeneuve has proven himself a masterful filmmaker with emotionally powerful movies like Incendies and gripping thrillers like Sicario. He excels in any genre, but has recently become known for his large-scale science fiction films—including Arrival, Dune, and his acclaimed version of Blade Runner. What’s truly remarkable is his ability to move effortlessly between these epic projects and more intimate, character-driven dramas or action-packed thrillers, demonstrating his impressive range as a director.

Greta Gerwig

Greta Gerwig is a leading figure for women in film. Following a hugely successful 2023 with the global hit Barbie, her reputation as a director has soared. Since her breakout film Lady Bird in 2017, she’s consistently delivered critically acclaimed movies by skillfully blending insightful social commentary with her signature wit. This continued with the well-received Little Women and then the massive success of Barbie, which has earned $1.4 billion around the world.

I’m constantly amazed by how Greta Gerwig brings out the best in her actors – it really shows how incredibly talented and funny she is. She’s not afraid to take chances with her films, and I loved how she followed up a personal story like Lady Bird with a fresh take on Little Women – it’s honestly one of the best adaptations I’ve seen. Then came Barbie, which became a massive hit, and now she’s tackling The Chronicles of Narnia! It’s clear she’s both a visionary artist and someone who knows how to connect with a wide audience – a really rare combination.

David Fincher

David Fincher is a director who delves into the darker side of human nature, creating films that are often unsettling and complex. While he gained fame in the 1990s with movies like Fight Club and Se7en, some of his most highly praised work came in the 21st century, including The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Zodiac, Gone Girl, and his latest, The Killer. It’s safe to say his films aren’t for the faint of heart!

As a huge movie fan, it feels silly to even introduce Quentin Tarantino – he’s become a legend! He really exploded onto the scene in the ’90s with films like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, but it’s amazing how consistently great he’s been ever since. Think about Kill Bill, Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – some of his biggest successes! He’s got such a distinct style, he’s almost become a brand in himself, and honestly, audiences flock to see anything with his name on it.

Quentin Tarantino is famous for creating visually striking films that often spark debate. He’s highly acclaimed and has won numerous awards for his clever, unforgettable characters and distinctive storytelling style. Tarantino has hinted at retirement after his tenth movie, leaving fans wondering if he’ll receive recognition from the Academy with this final project or continue directing. Regardless, he’s undoubtedly one of the most important and influential filmmakers of the 21st century.
