Disney is a globally famous brand, so it’s surprising to see a different show, “The Beauty,” become the second most popular on Disney+. While Disney is best known for animated movies for kids, the company has expanded a lot over the years by buying other entertainment companies. A great example is when Disney bought Marvel Entertainment in 2009. Now, we easily recognize the Disney logo on huge hits like the Avengers movies, but that wouldn’t have seemed likely in the past.
While the Disney-Marvel connection sometimes felt strange before, it’s nothing compared to what’s currently available on Disney+. Right now, one of the most popular shows on the platform is The Beauty, a horror series with a mature rating. Based on a disturbing comic book, the show follows two detectives investigating a sexually transmitted disease that dramatically changes people’s appearances – giving them beauty, but at a terrifying price.
How The Beauty Became One Of Disney+/Hulu’s Top Trending TV Shows
Despite being quite different from typical Disney+ shows, The Beauty is currently a big hit on the platform. It’s followed by more expected Disney+ series, like Percy Jackson and the Olympians (at number 5) and Pole to Pole with Will Smith (at number 6), which really highlight how unusual The Beauty is in comparison.
Disney+’s latest hit show unexpectedly gained popularity because Disney now owns Hulu. Called The Beauty and produced by Ryan Murphy Productions, it originally airs on the FX network. Because FX shows are available to stream on Hulu in the United States, this unsettling horror series is, in a way, also part of what Disney+ offers.
Disney+ Fully Absorbing Hulu Will Continue To Change The Streaming Platform
Although The Beauty isn’t promoted like Disney princess films and doesn’t feature Disney’s branding, that’s different from how Disney handles Marvel. Disney’s mature content from FX and Hulu is treated separately. However, Disney still benefits financially from The Beauty’s success, and that will likely shape the types of shows available on the streaming service in the future.
Disney plans to phase out the standalone Hulu app by 2026 and combine its content with Disney+. While Hulu will eventually disappear as a separate platform by 2027, the Hulu brand itself will remain. Shows like The Beauty demonstrate why Disney wants to preserve the Hulu name, even as it integrates the service into Disney+. Essentially, Disney will continue to use the Hulu brand, but everything will be managed within Disney+.
