The Batman Writer Seemingly Wants To Write A Spider-Man Movie For Tobey Maguire, And I’m So Down For This

Let me begin by saying that we already have several Spider-Man films on the way. Tom Holland will reprise his role as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for release in 2026, and the animated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will follow in 2027. But, if another Spider-Man movie were to be made, one of the writers from The Batman seems interested in writing a story centered around Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man.

It all began when a fan pointed out that the re-release of the Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire and directed by Sam Raimi earned $2.25 million last weekend in almost 1500 theaters. When that same fan mentioned this to Mattson Tomlin – who co-wrote the script for The Batman with Matt Reeves and Peter Craig – and suggested using the earnings to fund a Spider-Man 4 script, the writer responded on X with this:

Trying!

Is he being serious, or was he just kidding about potentially writing a fourth movie in the original Spider-Man series? There was a period when Spider-Man 4 was actually being developed, but several issues caused the sequel starring Tobey Maguire to be canceled. This then allowed the Amazing Spider-Man films, with Andrew Garfield, to begin, though that series also ended abruptly after only two movies. And that’s how Tom Holland ended up taking on the role in the MCU, first appearing in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, followed by Spider-Man: Homecoming the next year.

Seeing Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland’s Peter Parkers together in Spider-Man: No Way Home was fantastic, and ever since, many fans have wanted Spider-Man 4 to be made. Sam Raimi has even talked about how he would approach the film, considering the years that have passed since Spider-Man 3. We didn’t learn much about what happened to Maguire’s Peter after he beat Venom and Sandman and after the loss of his friend Harry Osborn, leaving plenty of story potential to explore.

It’s unclear if Mattson Tomlin would use the initial ideas for Spider-Man 4 – such as featuring Vulture and Black Cat – or begin a completely new story. Regardless, I really enjoyed The Batman and am excited about what he and Matt Reeves have planned for The Batman: Part II in 2027, so I’d be happy to see Tomlin take on this abandoned project. However, since Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films are still being made, it seems unlikely this movie will ever happen.

However, there’s another possibility. Mattson Tomlin has a background in comic book writing, having worked on titles like Batman: The Imposter for DC Comics, and BRZRKR: Fallen Empire and A Vicious Circle for Boom! Studios. If he were allowed to write a script for Spider-Man 4, perhaps Marvel would consider adapting it as a comic book series. DC has successfully done something similar recently with their Batman ’89 and Superman ’78 comics, so there’s no reason the story from the Tobey Maguire films couldn’t continue in a different format.

Thankfully, we have Spider-Man: Brand New Day coming out on July 31, 2026. I would be happy if they could also make some headway on Spider-Man 4, though. In the meantime, we’ll see what Mattson Tomlin does next with The Batman: Part II, which is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027.
