Matt Reeves’ The Batman delivered a remarkably realistic and engaging portrayal of Gotham City and Batman. The Batman – Part II, scheduled for release in 2027, will continue this story, and we now know the time jump since the first film’s events.
Released in 2022, The Batman features Robert Pattinson as the new Batman, early in his crime-fighting career. Last year, the HBO Max series The Penguin expanded the universe, and a sequel, The Batman – Part II, is on the way.
With recent comments from Colin Farrell, who plays the Penguin, we now understand the time jump in The Batman Part II and what it means for the future of Matt Reeves’ Gotham City story.
The Penguin’s Colin Farrell Recently Confirmed When The Batman – Part II Is Set

In a recent conversation with ComicBook.com, Colin Farrell revealed that the sequel to The Batman will pick up just a few weeks after the events of the first season of his show, The Penguin.
This is important because it suggests the next movie will explore the consequences of the recent spin-off series, similar to how The Penguin takes place only a week after the first Batman film.
The eight-episode series Penguin, set in 2024, begins a week after the flooding of Gotham City, an event shown in The Batman and caused by the Riddler and his group.
The show detailed how Oswald Cobb, known as Oz, filled the power gap left after the death of crime boss Carmine Falcone. It followed his climb to become Gotham’s top criminal leader, showing his battles for control against the Maroni and Falcone families, including conflicts with Carmine’s daughter, Sofia.
Matt Reeves also revealed that the Penguin series is set in November and early December, before the big holiday season. Christmas and New Year’s Eve might appear in the next Batman movie, as the first film started on Halloween.

When The Batman – Part II starts, Gotham City will probably still be recovering from the recent gang war and the widespread chaos that allowed Penguin to become so powerful.
I’m really excited because it seems like Matt Reeves is building his Gotham City in a way that feels incredibly realistic – things are changing gradually, not with huge time jumps. Because of that, I think watching The Penguin series is going to be crucial if you want to truly understand what’s happening in Gotham when The Batman – Part II finally comes out. It’s going to fill in so much of the background and context!
Wow, the end of Penguin season 1 was a huge cliffhanger with the Bat-Signal lighting up! It definitely feels like we’re going to see Batman jump into the action right away in the Elseworlds sequel. And it’s cool that this new series isn’t part of James Gunn’s big DC Universe plan, which makes things even more interesting when you think about how The Batman movie ended in 2022. It feels like everything is connected!
I’m hearing Catwoman, Selina Kyle, has decided to make a fresh start in Blüdhaven, which is a shame, but I get it. More importantly, it sounds like Penguin is really stepping up his game and becoming a major power player in Gotham’s criminal underworld. He won’t necessarily be the big bad guy, but he’s definitely going to be a huge problem for Batman to deal with, setting himself up as the new king of crime!
The Penguin significantly changed the structure of organized crime in Gotham City, and Robert Pattinson’s Batman will likely have to deal with the consequences in the next film.
This brief time skip strongly suggests that all the films and series within Matt Reeves’ Gotham universe will tell one continuous, large story. It also reinforces a familiar idea for Batman comic fans: Gotham City is a place where danger is always lurking, and a new crisis is never far off.
Will A Penguin Season 2 Still Happen After The Next Batman Movie?

Even though Farrell isn’t sure if a second season of The Penguin will happen, the timing of The Batman – Part II – starting shortly after the first season ends – creates some interesting possibilities for the story.
If a second season of The Penguin is made, it could take place at the same time as, or right after the events of The Batman – Part II, similar to how the first season followed the original Batman movie.
I’m really excited about the possibilities for a second season! Since not much time will have passed, Oz’s new ruler, Cobb, will still be getting used to things. I think it would be fascinating to see him navigate that adjustment period, especially as he tries to maintain his power and deal with anyone who might challenge him for the crown. It feels like a really natural place to start a new story, with all sorts of potential rivals emerging.
However, if the next movie wraps up Cobb’s story nicely, we might then see a new series centered around one of Batman’s villains.
Even if there isn’t another season of the show, viewers of Matt Reeves’ Gotham can anticipate a major role for the character Oz in The Batman – Part II, now that he’s become the city’s leading criminal boss.
