The Batman 2 Gets Major Filming Update, Andy Serkis Returning

Robert Pattinson will be back as Batman soon! The next movie is scheduled to hit theaters next year, and we now know when filming is set to start.

According to reports, filming for The Batman Part II will begin in London in June. This news comes after indications that preparations for the sequel were about to start. Fans were worried about potential delays, as the film has been postponed before, but this latest information suggests the project is moving forward as planned.

Andy Serkis Will Return as Alfred Pennyworth

Deadline reports that Andy Serkis will definitely return as Alfred Pennyworth in the Batman sequel, continuing his role as Bruce Wayne’s trusted butler and friend. While expected, his return is now confirmed, alongside Robert Pattinson as Batman. Jeffrey Wright and Colin Farrell are also likely to reprise their roles as Jim Gordon and the Penguin, respectively. Sebastian Stan is reportedly joining the cast as Harvey Dent, and Scarlett Johansson is also said to be part of the film.

The highly anticipated sequel to The Batman will arrive in theaters more than five years after the first film captivated audiences in 2022. Director Matt Reeves revitalized the Dark Knight franchise with the original film, which earned over $772 million globally and established its own unique storyline, separate from other DC movies produced by Warner Bros. Pictures. The success of the The Penguin streaming series on HBO Max suggests further spin-offs are possible, particularly if The Batman Part II also proves to be a major hit.

Who Will Be the Villain in the Sequel?

There’s talk that Barry Keoghan, who briefly played the Joker in the first movie, will be back for the sequel, but this isn’t official yet. Even if he does return, it won’t be as the main villain. Director Matt Reeves hinted in a podcast interview with Josh Horowitz that the sequel’s villain will be someone new. This likely means the Joker won’t be the central threat, and a less famous Batman enemy will finally get their chance to be the Dark Knight’s biggest challenge in a major film.

Reeves explained that many other superhero films, which he enjoys, often move beyond the hero’s origin story to focus on their villains. While his film touched on Batman’s past, it didn’t fully explore it. He wanted to avoid this pattern, prioritizing keeping Robert Pattinson’s Batman at the heart of the narrative. That was the main goal for the film.

The Batman Part II is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on Oct. 1, 2027.
