The Apothecary Diaries Season 2: Everything spoiled in the new opening sequence

The long-awaited return of “The Apothecary Diaries” is here! The initial installment airs today, 9:15am (Pacific Time), on Crunchyroll. Spanning two consecutive seasons, or approximately 24 episodes each, this new season will follow the same format as its predecessor.

Before the debut, Toho unveiled the fresh opening scene for this season, offering a sneak peek into the significant occurrences that are set to take place over the next twelve episodes. These episodes will be based on Volume 3 of the original book.

Kicking off the show is the tune ‘Hyakka Ryouran,’ sung by Lilas Ikuta, who’s part of YOASOBI. To avoid any spoilers about the main events, it might be best for you to skip ahead if that’s something you prefer not to know.

In a new role as Jinshi’s assistant, Maomao returned to the outer court. However, with Consort Gyokuyou expecting, she moved to the inner palace to ensure her safety and protection against any potential poisoning.

Every event hinted in the opening sequence of Apothecary Diaries Season 2

The beginning subtly references the Moon Fairy dance act, an exceptional performance prepared for distinguished guests from another land during a banquet. Later, it subtly hints at the individual who portrayed the Moon Fairy years ago. Additionally, Ayla and Aylin are noticeable among the crowd.

Instead of depicting the lunar deity as a traditionally beautiful woman, they insist on her being both striking and towering in stature. Since no individual meets these criteria, they opt for an intriguing solution to the conundrum.

It’s not surprising that it suggests regular instances of food-borne illness in the inner court. Tragically, someone is likely to succumb to poisoning, and their untimely demise could reveal the secret behind Consort Jin’s death – a mystery that may prove to be one of the most intricate cases this season.

The start appears to pay homage to the Mirrors section, where Gaoshun seeks Maomao’s assistance in deciphering the mystery of a young woman becoming pregnant under seemingly impossible circumstances.

In addition, we observe Hongniang and Lingli strolling together, eventually discovering a cat they’ll call Maomao (as suggested by the episode’s title). Meanwhile, Shisui (temporarily referred to as such) and a jasmine plant from the caravan are also hinted at (related to the “Envoys Arc”).

In some parts of the storyline, there are numerous doorways – a symbol of the Shrine of Choosing, where a test takes place to determine if the ruler and their partner rightfully rule, yielding an engaging climax. Furthermore, we’ll delve deeper into Jinshi’s past (hinted by the Hunt Ceremony connected to him), and this season will uncover more about Empress Dowager from the perspective of Emperor Maomao.

In one particular moment, Mamao can be seen grasping an orpiment, a mineral once utilized for numerous purposes – even medicinally – yet it’s surprisingly harmful as it contains toxic properties.

Ultimately, it’s implied that Jinshi and Maomao find themselves leaping off a waterfall, subsequently venturing into a cave. This sequence of events ultimately unfolds the much-anticipated frog scene, which sheds light on the enigmatic character of Jinshi as well.

At the close, Xiaolan is found scribbling on the earth. Meanwhile, Jinshi is working tirelessly to amass backing for his ambition to boost literacy within the palace’s inner circle, including the servant class.
