Following his success in Squid Game, Lee Byung-hun has landed another major role. He’ll be co-leading The Koreans, a remake of the popular FX spy series The Americans. This new series will be available on Disney+ everywhere except the U.S., where it will stream on Hulu. Production is already happening, so it should be released soon.
Details obtained by The Hollywood Reporter reveal that the upcoming Korean drama will reimagine the original series by setting it in 1990s South Korea. The show will star Lee as a North Korean spy posing as a married man, with Han Ji-min playing his wife. Like the series The Americans, which featured Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as Soviet spies pretending to be a typical American family, this couple will maintain a false facade while living undercover. The new series will explore their lives as they attempt to blend in while carrying out their secret mission.
The show centers around a married couple who appear to be typical parents to those around them – even their own children – but are secretly highly skilled North Korean spies tasked with destabilizing South Korea. The reimagined series will explore the deep divide between the two Koreas, following the spies as they grapple with internal conflicts of patriotism, loyalty, who they are, and their feelings for others, all while a determined South Korean counterintelligence agent closes in on uncovering their true identities.

Eric Schrier, who used to lead FX Entertainment where he developed the show The Americans and now oversees international content for Disney, was initially unsure about a remake. He had a strong connection to the original series. However, after talking with the creators and stars of The Americans – Joe Weisberg, Joel Fields, Matthew Rhys, and Keri Russell – and receiving their support, he approved the new series, The Koreans.
Joe and Joel seemed interested, but decided to step back from the project, likely because they didn’t want to get emotionally invested. They didn’t want to read the scripts, but they expressed interest in visiting the filming locations. They’re both fun and curious, and I think they’re mostly excited about the chance to travel to Korea, experience the culture, and try the food.
This is a developing story…
