Leslye Headland, the creator of the Disney+ series The Acolyte, has spoken about the show’s cancellation after just one season. She explained why she still views the series as a success and shared that it was initially developed under a different name.
The Acolyte had a different title, creator talks Star Wars show’s success
Originally, the series The Acolyte was going to be called The Lost Sister, a title that highlighted the connection between the characters Mae and Osha, who are twin sisters. This detail is confirmed in the book The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte, written by Kristin Baver and published by Abrams Books.
Leslye Headland, who created the series, shared that her goal with ‘The Acolyte’ was to offer a fresh take on Star Wars and build upon the stories she grew up with. She feels they achieved this, and the show’s fans have agreed since it launched in 2024.
The character Qimir, played by Manny Jacinto, is revealed to be a secret Sith master, putting an end to previous guesses about who he really was and confirming his connection to the Sith. Creator Leslye Headland explains the design team drew inspiration for Qimir’s mask from Kylo Ren’s helmet, while also referencing the samurai influences on Darth Vader’s look and visual cues from the character Rorschach in Watchmen.
Leslye Headland shared that her initial plan was to reveal Darth Plagueis at the season’s end, feeling that introducing him earlier would have been overwhelming for viewers. She drew inspiration from the way Gollum was revealed in ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ opting for a subtle approach that relied on visual hints like hand gestures and shadowy appearances rather than a direct reveal.
Originally, the author planned a scene right before Yoda’s final words. In it, Vernestra would exit the Galactic Senate Building and look up just as Senator Rayencourt said, ‘Welcome to the world of politics.’ However, the team ultimately decided to cut this scene during the editing process.
The Acolyte is available for streaming on Disney+.
