Lately, I’ve published my list of favorite films from 2024 (feel free to take a look ). Unfortunately, today isn’t a cheerful day. As I’ve done in the past, today I’ll be revealing my selections for the five most disappointing movies I watched last year. Regrettably, there were many contenders. But who really pays attention to such matters? Without any more delay, here are my choices. Have a read…if you dare.

Notable Omissions: In my perspective, some intriguing titles that didn’t quite make it to the list include: “Babygirl”, a captivating narrative about growing up; “Dirty Angels”, a gritty portrayal of camaraderie; “Red One”, a suspenseful thriller with a twist; “Lonely Planet”, an introspective journey through solitude; “The Killer’s Game”, a chilling exploration of morality; “Tarot”, a mystical tale woven with symbolism; “Kinds of Kindness”, a heartwarming depiction of empathy; “The Crow”, a dark allegory of fate and revenge; “The Union”, a dramatic portrayal of unity and discord; “A Family Affair”, a poignant exploration of family dynamics; “The Exorcism”, a terrifying tale of spiritual possession; “Something in the Water”, a chilling mystery unfolding beneath the surface; “Sunrise”, a beautiful depiction of hope in a new day; “Mean Girls”, a satirical commentary on high school social dynamics; and lastly, “The Apprentice”, a reality show that offers valuable insights into leadership.

#5 – “Space Cadet”

The idea behind “Space Cadet” seems rather disappointing. However, upon watching it, you find that it falls short of even your lowest expectations. “Space Cadet” is unintentionally comical in a negative manner. Despite Emma Roberts’ attempts to elicit laughter or empathy from the audience, her efforts are futile as the content is too poor to be salvaged by any performer.

#4 – “Anora”

It’s true, I understand. Many people seem to enjoy “Anora,” but some might see me as going against the grain. However, that’s absolutely not the case. After leaving the theater, my feelings about the movie haven’t changed – it’s chaotic and superficial, a grind that’s tiring in its 140-minute duration. The characters are irritating, lacking any real depth, making for an emotionally unsatisfying experience filled with endless squabbling, heated discussions, and at times, dialogue that feels like it could melt your brain. Finding an emotional core amidst all the noise might be a challenge.

#3 – “Madame Web”

2021 wasn’t particularly kind to superhero movies, with Sony’s SpiderVerse experiencing some challenges, particularly with the movie “Madame Web” which turned out to be quite a disappointment. I can’t help but feel sorry for Dakota Johnson, who likely earned a substantial paycheck but may not have seen much career advancement from this film. From the beginning, it seemed like a risky venture. Given the lackluster story, uninteresting characters, forgettable villain, and dull action sequences, it’s no surprise that it didn’t fare well. That’s not a recipe for success.

#2 – “The Strangers: Chapter 1”

I strongly connected with the home invasion horror film “The Strangers” from 2008. Regrettably, “The Strangers: Chapter One” fails to recapture what made the first one great. Essentially, it’s a watered-down version of the original, with the majority of the runtime consumed by anticipation rather than action. There’s hardly enough substance here for a full-length movie; it feels more like a 30-minute episode than a feature film. And when something eventually does occur, it doesn’t justify the wait.

#1 – “Mea Culpa”

Tyler Perry’s production “Mea Culpa,” marketed as a blend of legal, psychological, and erotic drama, aims to deliver multiple genres in one package. Regrettably, it fails to create any sense of thrill or excitement whatsoever. Instead, this misguided, empty, and borderline exploitative film, released directly on streaming platforms, manages to elicit a few unintentional chuckles. Despite the evident acting skills within the cast, they are unfortunately stuck in a predicament with no favorable outcomes. The viewers, too, find themselves caught up in an unfortunate situation.
