Following a recent meeting, the inventor of Tetris suggested sending Rubik’s Cubes into space. He believes they would serve as a unique representation of human intelligence and culture, much like a time capsule.
I was checking out some stuff about this new Rubik’s Tetris Cube – it’s seriously cool! Basically, it’s a puzzle that takes the twisty fun of a Rubik’s Cube and mixes it with those classic Tetris shapes. I saw some comments from the people who made it, and they were talking about how they brought the two games together.
For the first time on camera, the creators of Tetris, Alexey Pajitnov, and the Rubik’s Cube, Ernő Rubik, came together in a unique collaboration.
Tetris creator calls Rubik’s Cube a symbol of human civilization
The Rubik’s Tetris Cube is a unique puzzle that differs from the classic Rubik’s Cube. Instead of aligning colors, you solve it by fitting together six different Tetris-like shapes. Once solved, the cube can be displayed on a special stand designed to look like a straight line piece from Tetris.
I’m seriously thrilled to finally meet Erno Rubik today! You know, it’s funny, I think a lot of people don’t fully grasp how important the Rubik’s Cube really is. To me, it’s become a symbol of everything modern civilization has achieved – it’s just that iconic.
If I had to represent human civilization with objects sent into interstellar space, this would definitely be one of the ten I’d choose.
He mentioned previous attempts to represent humanity in space, like the golden records sent with the Voyager probes. He argued that the Rubik’s Cube is particularly effective because it’s simple and easily understood by everyone.
When someone suggested adding Tetris to an interstellar archive like the one for the Rubik’s Cube, its creator, Alexey Pajitnov, didn’t think it would work. He explained that Tetris needs computers and specific technology to be played, unlike the Rubik’s Cube, which is a self-contained physical puzzle.
Pajitnov explained that the real value of puzzles isn’t about winning or being the best, but simply enjoying the experience. He believes that bringing joy through puzzles is the most important part of what they do, and that won’t change even as artificial intelligence gets more advanced.
The event brought together the creators of Tetris and the Rubik’s Cube, showcasing their combined work with the Rubik’s Tetris Cube as the main attraction.
