Tessa Thompson’s Hedda Returns to the Charts 2 Weeks After Premiere

Tessa Thompson’s new thriller, Hedda, is gaining popularity with viewers and is now climbing the streaming charts. Directed by Nia DaCosta, the film had a brief run in theaters starting October 22nd before becoming available on Prime Video on October 29th. While critics generally liked it, it didn’t immediately resonate with audiences. However, that seems to be changing, as Hedda has returned to Prime Video’s top 10 most-watched films.

According to FlixPatrol, the movie Hedda is currently the third most popular film on Prime Video in the U.S. Critics seem to like it, giving it a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 117 reviews. However, viewers have a very different opinion, with a Popcorn Score of only 59%. Despite the big difference in opinion, Hedda continues to attract viewers on Amazon Prime Video two weeks after its release.

Tessa Thompson Reunites With The Marvels Director for Amazon’s Hedda

The film Hedda brought together Tessa Thompson and director Nia DaCosta, who previously worked on The Marvels. Unfortunately, The Marvels didn’t perform well with audiences or critics, ranking as one of the lowest-rated movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It currently has a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and a 79% audience score. Like several other films released after Avengers: Endgame, The Marvels struggled to gain traction, earning only $206 million worldwide.

Look, the MCU has had a bit of a bumpy ride lately, but things are looking up! Next year, we’ve got Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and then the big one: Avengers: Doomsday. I’m especially excited about Doomsday because it’s bringing back some familiar faces – and get this, Joe and Anthony Russo are directing! That’s the team behind some of Marvel’s biggest hits, and they’re already signed on to do the next Avengers film after that, Avengers: Secret Wars. So, a lot to look forward to!

What Is Hedda About?

This production of Hedda is a fresh take on Henrik Ibsen’s classic play from 1891. Actress Thompson stars as Hedda, a new bride who appears calm on the surface but is secretly unhappy. Her carefully constructed composure is threatened when Eileen Lovberg (played by Nina Hoss), a talented and captivating woman from her past, returns.

At a wild party, people from all walks of life find themselves caught up in the drama created by a woman desperately seeking a lost love. The night quickly descends into a cruel game of manipulation fueled by desire, envy, and deceit.

DaCosta updated the story by making Hedda’s former lover a woman instead of a man. Emma Thompson enjoyed playing a Hedda that felt fresh and different from what audiences might expect. “I didn’t want to play a cold, distant Hedda,” Thompson explained. “I’ve seen that done a lot, and some of the best portrayals, like Fiona Shaw’s, are actually very warm and inviting.”

Hedda is now streaming on Prime Video.
