Tell Me Lies’s Cat Missal Left Bree ‘at Her Craziest Point’

Okay, so I just finished watching the Tell Me Lies season finale, “Are You Happy Now, That I’m on My Knees?” and wow… I need to talk about it. Seriously, be warned – if you haven’t seen it yet, there are major spoilers ahead!

If you finished season three of Tell Me Lies, you’ve survived the drama surrounding Stephen DeMarco – arguably the worst college boyfriend ever. Sadly, the same can’t be said for the character of Bree, played by Cat Missal.

The series finale, titled “Are You Happy Now, That I’m on My Knees?,” concludes with a dramatic reveal at Bree and Evan’s wedding. Stephen exposes that Bree has been having an affair with Wrigley for months and, more shockingly, that she was responsible for leaking the tape of Lucy confessing to lying about a past sexual assault. Stephen wasn’t the one who damaged Lucy’s life – it was Bree, and this is his way of getting even.

The season’s shocking twist was the final piece in a truly difficult journey for Bree, who had previously been the most stable and reserved character in Tell Me Lies. Actress Missal explains that part of the appeal of playing Bree is that she’s always been somewhat of a mystery, and this season finally revealed more about who she really is. Now that the season has ended, it’s clear that Bree, like her friends, is more complicated than she appears.

The ending of Tell Me Lies is open to interpretation, showing Lucy laughing after Stephen abandons her. What do you make of that laugh? Does it signal her finally breaking free? I see it as a laugh of disbelief – a realization that she’s found herself in this frustrating situation again. I’m not sure she’ll ever truly escape Stephen’s influence. Their complicated connection runs so deep, they’re even still intimate at the wedding, despite their mutual dislike. So, the question remains: will Lucy ever be free? I honestly don’t know.

I was worried people would turn on Bree after learning she leaked Lucy’s tape. It might sound self-centered, but she’s been one of the more likable characters, and this feels like a really harsh turn of events for her.

Were you given any advance warning about where your character’s story was going? No, I wasn’t. Usually, we don’t know what’s coming – we just pick up bits of information from others. I only found out by reading the script.

Okay, let me tell you, the plot gets really tangled up because of all the flashbacks and shifting timelines. Honestly, a lot of questionable decisions are made. I really felt for Pippa – she doesn’t get the support she needs. And Lucy? She’s just misguided, thinking she’s doing the right thing when she’s actually making things worse. Then you have Bree, who uncovers some damaging information and effectively destroys Lucy’s life, all while still reeling from Lucy’s affair with Evan way back in season one. It’s a messy, emotionally charged situation, to say the least.

It’s a really difficult situation. Do you think Lucy and Bree can fix their friendship after what happened at the wedding? I believe any friendship can be repaired, but whether they should is another question. Their relationship is just so unhealthy, and honestly, all of these women are constantly putting each other down.

It’s difficult for me to label any of those women as problematic because, in comparison to Stephen, they seem quite sensible. I realize that, back then, people didn’t really understand or talk about going to therapy as much. Seriously, therapy could have helped!

It was great when Bree finally told Stephen he needed therapy at the wedding – it was just as satisfying to hear as it was to watch! Apparently, that moment wasn’t even scripted – it was improvised, which makes it even better. I haven’t seen it myself yet, but everyone agrees it was a really satisfying scene. The whole sequence felt like a perfect ending, with all the built-up tension finally exploding, and it was a lot of fun to film.

I think that scene will really resonate with viewers because Stephen rarely faces any repercussions for his actions. A lot of fans have been saying they want all the women to join forces and take him down by the series’ end. I agree – I almost wish that’s what would happen.

Throughout the season, the relationship between Bree and Lucy really became the main love story, so it felt especially cruel when Bree gave Lucy an ultimatum at the wedding, threatening to cut her off if she chose Stephen. I don’t think Bree actually meant it, though. She’s really struggling in her life, and Lucy is all she has. The cast even joked that Bree never manages to make new friends – you can see at the wedding there’s no one else she’s close to, which is just sad. However, Lucy has a pattern of making impulsive decisions that backfire. She often ends up embarrassed and regretting her choices, and we’ve seen this happen repeatedly. I think if Lucy came back to Bree and admitted she messed up again, Bree would forgive her. That complicated, on-again, off-again dynamic is just how their relationship works.

How often can you watch someone repeat the same errors? It seems that’s just part of loving someone. She feels deeply connected to Lucy, considering her to be family, especially since she doesn’t really have a family of her own – her close friends are all she has.

The scene where Bree’s family – Oliver, Marianne, and her mother – confronted her and accused her of stalking them was incredibly difficult to watch, especially because of how much it affected Bree. I was curious about how you tackled filming that intense moment. It was interesting because we filmed it early in the production schedule, due to Tom Ellis’s availability. We got all of his scenes done in the first few weeks. While we usually film in chronological order, shooting that scene early actually helped me establish an emotional foundation for the entire season.

In that scene, Marianne really hurts Bree, but then Bree surprisingly takes Marianne’s advice – to be with someone who loves her more deeply than she loves them – when she gets back together with Evan. It’s interesting why Bree would listen to her after that. I think it’s about the situation Bree is in at the moment. She feels incredibly betrayed by Wrigley after he sleeps with Pippa, especially since they had agreed to try a relationship. That feeling of betrayal makes Marianne’s words stick with her, leading her to think she needs to go back to Evan for safety and someone who will consistently love her more. Also, Evan admits he messed up with Lucy and feels bad about it. Bree finding this out probably reinforces her decision, making her believe Evan won’t hurt her again and will be a reliable partner.

Bree experienced a violent attack in the first season, followed by a harmful relationship in the second. Now, in the third season, people are suggesting she fabricated everything. It makes you wonder how she processes these events internally. I believe Bree is skilled at mentally separating different parts of her life, essentially building walls around her experiences. It’s difficult to fully understand the long-term impact of the trauma she’s endured, but even after the initial attack, she didn’t seem to recognize it as a serious assault. It was almost as if she expected negative things to happen, creating a difficult cycle where she repeatedly finds herself in bad situations because they feel familiar. It’s a dark thought, but it’s important to remember the context of the time – there simply weren’t many resources available to help, and no one seemed to notice or address the clear signs that something was wrong.

The biggest surprise of the season for me was the romance between Wrigley and Bree. I didn’t see it coming at all, and I was thrilled because both characters are genuinely kind people. Wrigley often seemed misunderstood, but Spencer House is so genuinely good that his kindness always shines through, even when Wrigley was less likable earlier on. Bree, too, has been trying to fit into roles she thought she needed to play, but it turned out to be just a front for a sweet person who’s been through a lot. Seeing them connect was really heartwarming. Their relationship developed naturally, even though it started as cheating. They bonded over a photography class and by sharing their past traumas, which created a deep connection between them.

As a movie fan, I loved the lighter, rom-com vibe of the scenes with Wrigley and Bree – it felt like a totally different show! Honestly, after filming such a heavy season two, it was such a relief to play something a little brighter. It really does wear you down having to constantly dive into those darker emotions, especially with those long shooting days. I’m so thankful for my castmates though, we always keep things light with jokes and games to get us through. So, getting to do a scene where Bree and Wrigley were just genuinely laughing and having fun? It was amazing. Bree’s a romantic at heart, and she really wants that kind of connection, so it felt natural and easy to play.

The episode concludes with Stephen essentially ruining Bree and Evan’s relationship before they even get started. While some viewers will likely sympathize with Evan, it’s hard to understand why they shouldn’t. Ultimately, it’s difficult not to feel bad for him – he made a mistake, but the situation is incredibly tough. He’s marrying someone who’s in love with another person, and now he has to cope with this dramatic fallout. However, everyone involved will have to deal with the consequences.

I find it difficult to be impartial when watching the show, as I naturally see things from Bree’s perspective. She’d be deeply burdened with guilt, and she genuinely feels bad for him. She’s also unaware of what Oliver has been up to.

After all the drama with the wedding, do you think Bree and Wrigley can still make things work? It seems likely – after all, true love usually finds a way!

Just after we spoke, the show Tell Me Lies was cancelled after three seasons. I quickly called Missal to get some additional comments.

It’s a mixed bag of emotions. While I’m sad to see this part of my life end and know the fans will be disappointed, I feel good that the show concluded on a strong note. Mostly, I’m just thankful for the experience.

I’m satisfied with how Bree’s story ends. It was challenging and enjoyable to portray her at such a difficult time, but I hope viewers don’t only remember her as being completely unstable. I’m happy with her storyline overall – seeing her life fall apart, but still holding onto a glimmer of hope with Wrigley, especially with that final look they share. I think that’s a fitting place to conclude her journey.

Some viewers might criticize Bree, but it’s important to remember she’s dealing with significant past trauma and is trying to heal. She’s still young, and I care about her a lot. I hope fans can be understanding. Also, the show itself often explores difficult and unhealthy behaviors, so her actions might fit within that context.

If I could give Bree advice after her wedding, it would be to hit the reset button. Things are already complicated, so she should focus on doing what makes her happy and living life on her own terms. It’s time to be truly honest with herself, learn from past errors, and build a new circle of friends. And seriously, she needs to stop inviting Stephen to events – it’s baffling why he was even at the wedding!

Evan inviting Stephen to his wedding was a huge mistake, and I imagine Bree and Evan had a big argument about it. Honestly, I’m not sure if Bree and Evan even communicate with each other anymore.

I’m going to miss working with the cast the most – they’re incredibly talented and wonderful people. I’m really looking forward to seeing what they all do next. Overall, working on ‘Tell Me Lies’ has been a fantastic experience, and each season has been better than the last, constantly pushing us to grow.

Looking back at fashion from the 2000s, those low-rise jeans were definitely a memorable trend – and not in a good way! I’m glad those days are over, though I did enjoy having my Razr phone. Overall, the style of that era was fun, and it was a blast to work on projects set in that time.

Someone asked if I took anything home from the set. I didn’t really take much. The costumes were falling apart because they were cheaply made, which was a little disappointing. I do have one top that Bree wore in the first season, during the lake house episode. It’s a brown top with small bronze rhinestones all over it – I think it’s from Wet Seal. I’m happy I was able to keep that!

Absolutely a great outcome! Any final thoughts for the show’s fans? Just a huge thank you to everyone who watched, tuned in, and stayed with these characters despite all their flaws. I hope viewers connected with something in the show, whether it reminded them of a time in their own lives or showed them a bit of themselves.
