Teeny-Tiny Grogu to Grace Big, Big Screen

As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who has witnessed the saga unfold from the original trilogy to the latest additions, I must admit that the announcement of “The Mandalorian & Grogu” movie has filled me with an unparalleled level of excitement. The prospect of seeing Baby Yoda on the big screen is a dream come true for many fans, myself included.

Intriguingly adorable, Baby Yoda is set to star in his own film. Here’s what has been disclosed about “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” from the original announcement up until the revelation that Jeremy Allen will be part of the cast.

Baby on board

January 9, 2024: Save us, Baby Yoda feature film, you’re our only hope!

As a passionate Star Wars fan, I’m thrilled to share that on January 9th, Star Wars HQ broadcasted a transmission revealing that director Jon Favreau is gearing up for a big-screen adaptation of “The Mandalorian.” Production is slated to commence later this year. This upcoming feature film will mark the first standalone Star Wars film since “The Rise of Skywalker (Episode IX)” concluded the sequel trilogy in 2019, a month after “The Mandalorian” premiered on Disney+. The series, featuring Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, the Mandalorian bounty hunter, has been a resounding success, largely due to the adorable Grogu, also known as the Child, the little green alien puppet actor who steals everyone’s heart.

After that, Lucasfilm’s main emphasis has largely shifted towards its Star Wars streaming series productions, such as The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, and Ahsoka, with the latter having a second season in progress. This upcoming movie adaptation of a Disney+ series marks the beginning of the franchise’s next cinematic era. Additionally, there are several Star Wars films being developed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni, but none of them feature the adorable green creature who dines on frogs and boosts merchandise sales – like those souvenir popcorn buckets!

Alongside Filoni and Kennedy, Favreau will not only direct but also produce this upcoming film. In a statement, Favreau expressed his delight in crafting tales within Lucas’ expansive universe, especially focusing on The Mandalorian and Grogu. He finds the idea of seeing them on the big screen very thrilling. Kennedy concurs, stating that these characters are ideally suited for cinematic adventures. This film featuring The Mandalorian & Grogu follows the announcement last year that Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian spinoff will now be a movie instead of a series. Here’s hoping for impressive box-office results for all involved parties.

Crossovers

On May 11, 2024: Sigourney Weaver is under discussion for a role in the cast of The Mandalorian & Grogu. TheInsider initially reported her potential involvement, followed by The Hollywood Reporter confirming the news. It remains unclear which character she would portray if she officially accepts the offer, but it’s exciting to imagine her exclaiming, “Leave Grogu alone, you monster!” We can only wonder if Jonesy and Baby Yoda would have been pals!

Another baby has entered the ring

On December 9, 2024: Apologies, Baby Yoda, but a fresh toddler is set to capture hearts and boost merchandise sales. The role of Rotta the Hutt, Jabba the Hutt’s son and cherished offspring, has been assigned to Jeremy Allen White. Mark your calendars for May 22, 2026, as filming wrapped up this month. With a considerable gap until the release, we have ample time to speculate on how White and Weaver will intertwine in the Star Wars universe; let’s hope they become friends.
