Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Reveals the Shocking Return of a Legendary Character

IDW Publishing is bringing back a beloved character with a surprising reunion – someone they believed was lost forever.

According to ComicBook, the next issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (#19), written by Gene Luen Yang with art by Fero Pe and colors by Luis Antonio Delgado, will bring back a significant but seldom-seen character: Tang Shen. While details about how the Turtles’ mother will return are still secret, her resurrection alongside the rest of the family is a big deal, particularly after Splinter recently came back to life.

In the next issue of IDW Publishing’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (#19), the Hamato Clan is finally reunited after the dramatic end of the Ujigami storyline. The Turtles are excited to show their parents around, as they haven’t been around for a long time. However, this happy reunion hides a troubling secret: something sinister has followed their parents back from the realm of the dead.

IDW Senior Group Editor Jake Thomas announced the return of Tang-Shen, explaining that despite being a long-lost family member, she’s been inaccessible until now. While Tang-Shen has only appeared briefly in the Turtles’ visions of the spirit world, the end of the current Ujigami storyline will bring her back to life.

Tang-Shen’s Upcoming Return Is Promising For TMNT’s Comic Book Workdbuilding

Thomas hinted at how bringing back Tang-Shen will impact the future of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, playfully suggesting that crossing the line between life and death won’t have serious consequences. He then connected this event to the upcoming TMNT story, ‘The City That Never Dies,’ wishing the Turtles luck – implying they’ll face significant challenges. He congratulated them on reuniting with Tang-Shen, but with a note of foreboding.

I’ve been a TMNT fan for ages, and I remember when Tang-Shen first showed up in the comics back in 2011, issue #5 to be exact. We learned a lot about her backstory then, which was cool. Unlike the Turtles and even Splinter, who’ve had their stories really fleshed out, Tang-Shen’s hasn’t gotten the same treatment… until now! It looks like we’re finally going to get a deeper dive into her story in just a few months, and I’m really excited about that.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #19 from IDW Publishing goes on sale June 10.
