The creator of Ted Lasso returns with another streaming success story.
The new comedy series Rooster, starring Steve Carell and Phil Dunster, has quickly become popular with viewers after its debut on HBO. The show centers around Greg Russo, played by Carell, a writer trying to connect with his daughter, Katie (Charly Clive), and their complicated relationship.
According to FlixPatrol, the new HBO Max comedy series Rooster is off to a strong start. Since premiering on March 8th, it’s quickly become popular with viewers. As of March 10, 2026, the show ranks at Number 3 globally on the platform and has reached the Number 1 spot in 10 countries, primarily in Europe – including Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, and North Macedonia.
In addition to the main cast, Rooster features Dunster as Archie, Katie’s former husband who has become distant from her since leaving her for a graduate student. Danielle Deadwyler plays Dylan Shepard, Lauren Tsai is Sunny, Archie’s new girlfriend, and John C. McGinley appears as Walter Mann, the President of Ludlow College – the setting for the series.
It’s no surprise the show quickly became a streaming success. Steve Carell is famous for his role in The Office, but he’s taken on diverse parts recently, including Alan Strauss in Hulu’s thriller The Patient and Nick in Netflix’s comedy-drama The Four Seasons. The show also benefits from other popular actors, like Dunster, who bring in viewers.
The show benefits from being co-created by Bill Lawrence, who also brought us the popular Apple TV series Ted Lasso. He’s currently juggling four shows at once: Shrinking (season 3), Ted Lasso (season 4), the developing second season of Bad Monkey, and this new series.
Critics and audiences alike are really enjoying Rooster, and the show has quickly become a hit on streaming platforms. Currently, it has an 87% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 39 reviews, with many highlighting Steve Carell’s performance and the show’s unique concept.
With nine episodes remaining and a weekly release, Rooster is poised to stay popular for a while. If the show keeps viewers engaged, it could become another long-running success for Lawrence, and give Carell a new hit comedy series as well.
New episodes of Rooster air Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
