As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Ted Danson’s journey with “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is nothing short of remarkable. The man who once played the lovable Sam Malone on “Cheers” has now become synonymous with the smug and pretentious version of himself on this iconic HBO sitcom.
Ted Danson featured prominently throughout all 12 seasons of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” portraying one of Larry David’s main adversaries. In this role, he played an arrogant and snobbish version of himself, winning over fans as a beloved character on the show, making a most recent appearance in the series finale.
Initially, Danson harbored some doubts regarding the unscripted HBO sitcom; he agreed to participate more as a gesture of sympathy towards David rather than genuine enthusiasm.
Danson stated that the show ‘Curb’ significantly impacted his life as it reignited his passion for humor. Initially, though, when he and his wife, Mary Steenburgen, first watched the pilot, Danson felt it was less than impressive.
I genuinely disliked it and felt sympathy for Larry David, my recent acquaintance. To offer a bit of comfort and encouragement, I suggested we could help by playing ourselves if needed. In a strange twist of events, this offhand comment led me to become part of something that significantly altered the course of my life.
David accepted Danson’s proposal without hesitation since they both appeared as exaggerated versions of themselves in the second installment of “Curb,” named “Ted and Mary.
On his podcast titled “Where Everyone Knows Your Name,” Danson, fresh from his role in the Netflix mystery-comedy “A Man on the Inside,” discussed his thoughts with fellow guest and “Curb” star J.B. Smoove.
Additionally, he recently grabbed headlines as he shared an anecdote from the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” set. It was during this production that Danson discovered his character was detested by David’s character. In fact, Danson arrived at his mark prematurely and accidentally overheard a conversation between David and another actor. The dialogue went something like: “Danson, he’s a real jerk.
Danson admitted on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in November that he was taken aback when he discovered he hadn’t read the scripts for the show because Jeff Garlin told him, “You don’t know? You’re the most clueless person I’ve ever met. Larry hates you!
