Yellowstone season 6 is happening somehow via Taylor Sheridan’s next Western series.
The main Yellowstone series concluded on Paramount Network with the Dutton family leaving their ranch behind. While Kevin Costner’s departure played a role, the finale offered a satisfying ending for his characters. Despite this, because the show is so popular, the story will continue with new shows. One sequel, Marshals on CBS, will follow Kayce, and another, Dutton Ranch, will focus on Beth and Rip.
Luke Grimes’ new show is Taylor Sheridan’s first venture onto traditional network television. However, the story of Beth and Rip is planned for streaming, likely on Paramount+. Although there’s no confirmed release date yet, promotion for their series will probably begin after Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell’s show, The Madison, finishes its run on the platform. Before that, director Greg Yaitanes, known for Marshals and Dutton Ranch, gives fans a preview of what to expect from Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly’s new show, and it seems like it will appeal to those who enjoy the original series.
In a recent interview with Collider, director Yaitanes hinted at what viewers can anticipate from Dutton Ranch. Surprisingly, he described working on it as feeling similar to filming season six of Yellowstone. He compared the experience to his work on Marshals, explaining that Marshals blended procedural elements more heavily, whereas Dutton Ranch stays truer to its Western style. You can find his complete statement below.
That’s a great question! We discussed it quite a bit, as everyone involved wanted to switch shows. Personally, I think Kayce would make the most sense on Dutton Ranch. As a fan, that’s a move I’d really get excited about. I’m just not sure Beth would fit as naturally into the world of Marshals. Kayce would easily blend into Dutton Ranch because the tone is similar to the original Yellowstone. Many of the people working on Dutton Ranch felt like they were essentially creating Season 6 of Yellowstone. Marshals is a lot more focused on action, guns, and that kind of exciting stuff.
Given how popular Yellowstone remained throughout its last season, the show likely could have continued for a couple more years. However, John Dutton III’s death provided a fitting conclusion, driving the plot for the remaining episodes. Ultimately, Kayce resolved the ranch’s financial issues by selling it at a low price to the Broken Rock Reservation, and Beth finally ended her long-standing conflict with Jamie.
As a big fan of the Yellowstone universe, I’ve been thinking a lot about how things ended for Kayce and Beth. Both their storylines definitely set things up for what comes next with Marshals. Honestly, Marshals changes some of what happened with Kayce – like Monica’s death and his work with the U.S. Marshals – which is a bit jarring. But we still don’t really know how Beth and Rip are adjusting to life off the ranch. It’s interesting, because the Dutton Ranch in Marshals actually feels more like the Yellowstone we know and love than the original show did sometimes! And if you think about it, Beth always seemed like the natural choice to take over from John, anyway.
Given the connections made in the final season of Yellowstone, fans are wondering if unresolved plot points will follow the characters as they move forward. There’s also speculation about a potential crossover between Dutton Ranch and Marshals, particularly after the latter show provided news about Rip and Kayce’s relationship. Even though the two shows are distinct, a connection between them would be welcome, as they share the same universe.
