Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Lioness’ Star’s ‘No Sleep ‘Til Christmas’ Dominates Netflix Streaming Chart

It doesn’t always take a huge budget to create a popular movie, especially during this time of year. Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is still a big hit, but a holiday film from 2018 has surprisingly become the second most-watched movie, surpassing KPop Demon Hunters.

Many people haven’t heard of the movie No Sleep ‘Til Christmas. It first appeared on Freeform, a Disney channel, and wasn’t widely seen for years. Although available on Disney+ in certain regions, it’s only now gaining attention thanks to its recent addition to Netflix, just before the platform releases its new holiday films. However, many viewers actually dislike it, with some even jokingly saying it’s “ruined Christmas.” They clearly missed the memorable scene of a snowman dressed as a stripper from last year’s version.

No Sleep ‘Til Christmas stars real-life couple Dave and Odette Annabel and was part of Freeform’s “25 Days of Christmas” project almost a decade ago. The synopsis of the movie reads a little like this:

Lizzie, a wedding planner, and Billy, a bartender, are both struggling with insomnia. As Lizzie prepares for her wedding, she finds herself wide awake each night while her fiancé sleeps soundly. A chance encounter brought on by her sleeplessness leads her to Billy, who shares her frustration. They soon discover a strange connection: they can only fall asleep when they’re near each other. What starts as a peculiar and inconvenient situation may turn out to be something much more significant than either of them expected.

Despite harsh criticism of the actors’ performances in the movie (though opinions definitely varied), both have solid backgrounds in television and film. Dave Annabel recently joined the world of Taylor Sheridan’s shows, with roles as Lee Dutton in Yellowstone and Neil in Lioness. He also appeared as Wes Larsen in five episodes of Netflix’s canceled series, The Waterfront. Odetta, on the other hand, has a long list of credits, starting with her debut in the 1990 film Kindergarten Cop, and including roles in Cloverfield and two Beverly Hills Chihuahua movies. She’s also been on TV shows like Banshee, Supergirl, and Walker.

Is ‘No Sleep ‘Til Christmas’ Any Good?

As a film buff, I’ve noticed No Sleep ‘Til Christmas definitely has a… divided audience. It’s safe to say more people actively avoid it than enjoy it! It only got three reviews from critics, which is pretty low, but surprisingly two of those were positive. Even one of the positive reviewers, Amanda Waltz from the Pittsburgh City Paper, admitted the whole premise was a bit far-fetched – she actually called it a miracle that the movie even worked! But audiences? They seem to disagree with the critics quite a bit.

Many viewers strongly disliked the movie, with some saying it “ruined Christmas.” Common complaints focused on the main character, who several reviewers described as unlikeable and even villainous. Daniel C said he couldn’t enjoy the film because he hated both leads, and Randal S expressed “pure rage” towards the main character, finding the story “messed up.” A recurring issue was the film’s failure to make the central character sympathetic.

While No Sleep ‘Til Christmas might not be a holiday hit, you can still watch it now on Netflix if you’re curious.
