Taylor Sheridan is celebrated as a writer and producer, but he also directs occasionally. Best known as the creator of Yellowstone and a former actor on Sons of Anarchy, Sheridan has directed films like the neo-Western mystery Wind River, featuring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen, and the thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead, starring Angelina Jolie. He considers Wind River to be his first directorial work, and doesn’t include his 2011 horror film, Vile, in that category.
Think of Vile as Taylor Sheridan’s take on a suspenseful trap movie. The film centers around ten people who are kidnapped and locked in a room, where they have 22 hours to escape. To win their freedom, they must withstand intense pain. As time runs out, the situation becomes increasingly tense and the captives grow more desperate. Eventually, the film reveals who is behind the ordeal and why. While the cast is largely made up of up-and-coming actors, it also features some familiar faces, including Greg Cipes (known from Teen Titans) and Ian Bohen, who plays Ryan on Yellowstone.
Taylor Sheridan Says He Only Assisted With the Horror Movie Vile’

In 2017, while promoting his film Wind River, Taylor Sheridan discussed his career and shared his favorite movies with Rotten Tomatoes. During the interview, he addressed a question about why Wind River was being called his directorial debut, despite having directed a horror film several years prior.
The creator of Landman claimed he wasn’t the main person in charge, just someone helping a friend. He explained that he:
A friend of mine somehow managed to get around $20,000 together and decided to make a horror movie with his friends. I warned him it was a bad idea, but he started filming and quickly got overwhelmed. He ended up calling me for help, and I said I’d do my best.
Sheridan felt it was a stretch to call him a director, as he’d only overseen a handful of scenes and given some guidance. He wasn’t involved in the editing at all and believed the credit was simply a thank you from a friend. Still, he acknowledged he picked up valuable lessons during the experience that he later used while filming Wind River.
Sheridan described the movie Vile as simply a bad horror film. This is similar to how James Cameron avoids talking about Piranha II: The Spawning, his least successful movie. Cameron doesn’t consider it his first directorial work because the producer heavily controlled the project, and he had no say in how it was finished.
The Horror Movie ‘Vile’ Can’t be Defended

The movie Vile received negative reviews from all three professional critics who saw it, which meant it didn’t qualify for a Rotten Tomatoes score. Its 30% rating on Popcornmeter and 4.8/10 on IMDb confirm it’s considered a terrible horror film. It’s understandable why the director, Sheridan, wants to distance himself from it, as he recognizes it’s easy target for his critics and is simply a very bad movie.
I recently watched Vile, and it was a truly painful experience – mirroring the suffering of the characters on screen. It’s a bizarre and chaotic film, like a strange mix of ingredients. The filmmakers clearly tried to recreate the feel of Saw, but the extreme gore actually reminded me more of older, independent horror films than big-budget Hollywood productions.

The movie starts with a hint of seriousness, but quickly becomes lazy and uninspired. It’s a confusing and over-the-top mess, and none of the characters are relatable – they exist solely to be killed in gruesome ways. Don’t expect to be challenged or thrilled; this film offers little in the way of intellectual stimulation or excitement.
Please remove Taylor Sheridan’s name from the credits and, if you’re feeling generous, put mine there instead. I deserve a director’s credit for, well, throwing my DVD copy away.
