Similar to a typical Western movie, American Primeval frequently features its skilled ensemble riding horses. However, it turned out to be a greater challenge than anticipated for lead actor Taylor Kitsch, an intriguing detail being the cause.
On Friday Night Lights, this actor played a role, and now he’s taking on Isaac, a character who guides Sara (Betty Gilpin) and her son Devin (Preston Mota) through treacherous landscapes in 1857 America. Although Kyle Chandler has often portrayed athletic or rugged characters, American Primeval presented him with fresh, distinct challenges.
During a recent chat, Kitsch confessed struggles with the show’s equestrian scenes, especially one issue that was not only uncomfortable but also incongruous for the series’ winter settings.
Taylor Kitsch rode horses with a broken foot on American Primeval
In an interview with the New York Post, Kitsch confessed that riding horses was difficult for him, as he hadn’t had much experience with them. He explained, “Since I hadn’t ridden a horse before, it was quite a challenge for me to learn how to do it, even if it just looked good on camera.
Not only did the shooting process prove challenging, but Kitsch also sustained a broken foot during it. Consequently, he had to wear a boot for much of the series, which added an extra layer of complexity whenever he mounted a horse, as he himself admitted.
When I dismounted the horse, my horse handler, who takes care of the animals, would assist me off-screen due to the pain in my foot. Additionally, handling horses in deep snow always carries an element of unpredictability.
The animals’ stubborn natures added an extra challenge to the situation. “One moment they seem cooperative in the morning,” he explained, “but when I return later, they’ve lost interest and are unwilling to participate.
For enthusiasts of the show Yellowstone who are eagerly anticipating the second season of 1923, or for those who wonder if there could be an unannounced spin-off of Yellowstone itself, this series would likely prove a compelling match.
