Take-Two Interactive recently underwent a major internal restructuring, including the layoff of its head of Artificial Intelligence and an unspecified number of other employees.
Luke Dicken, the former Head of AI, announced the layoffs in a LinkedIn post, also sharing news of his own departure. He expressed his disappointment, stating that both he and his team were leaving the company.
So, the announcement did confirm the layoffs, but it’s frustrating because it doesn’t actually say why they’re happening. Dicken said he’ll share more details later in a more thoughtful post, which is good, but I really wish we had some answers right now.
It’s really striking to see this happen so soon after Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, talked about how excited they were about using generative AI. He said they were “actively embracing” it, and then, just two months later, they announced layoffs. It feels a little weird to me as a fan that they were talking up new tech while also letting people go.
Take-Two’s AI direction faces new questions
Although reports indicate significant layoffs within Take Two Interactive’s AI division, it doesn’t automatically mean the company is abandoning AI altogether, especially considering recent statements from their CEO.
This indicates a significant restructuring is underway at the company, particularly regarding the integration of AI into their games.
Strauss Zelnick has stated that Rockstar Games isn’t using generative AI in their projects, including upcoming titles like GTA 6.
He also mentioned that the company is widely testing and using these technologies with many different teams and projects. The goal is to improve how things are done, lower expenses, and allow employees to focus on more creative and engaging work, ultimately leading to better entertainment.
Honestly, these layoffs feel like a total surprise, another weird shift in what the company thinks about AI and how they’re planning to use it in their games. It’s like they can’t make up their mind!
