Nightdive Studios, known for revitalizing classic video games and part of Atari, announced today that their critically acclaimed remake of the sci-fi horror game System Shock is now available on both Nintendo Switch and the new Nintendo Switch 2.
Nightdive Studios’ remake of the classic 1994 sci-fi game, System Shock, received excellent reviews when it launched on PC in 2023 and consoles in 2024. Now, it’s available for Nintendo Switch, letting players experience the updated game and own both System Shock games on their console. The Switch version includes features like gyro aiming and improvements suggested by the game’s community. Players with the newer Nintendo Switch 2 will also be able to use Joy-Con 2 controllers as a mouse and enjoy the game at up to 1440p resolution at 60 frames per second when docked, or 1080p at 60fps in handheld mode.
The System Shock remake reimagines the classic game with modern HD graphics, improved controls, a redesigned interface, and all-new audio. Players will explore the treacherous Citadel Station, now overrun by a terrifying army of mutated creatures controlled by the menacing AI, SHODAN. To escape, they’ll need to solve puzzles, uncover secrets, and rely on a mix of stealth, smarts, and powerful futuristic weapons.
While creating the new version of the game, Nightdive Studios collaborated with several people who originally worked on System Shock, including Terri Brosius, who famously voiced the villain SHODAN – one of the most recognizable characters in gaming history.
Justin Khan, producer at Nightdive Studios, explained that to get the game looking and running well on the Nintendo Switch, they kept the deferred rendering method, which is difficult to do on the Switch’s hardware but essential for dynamic lighting. The team is very happy with how it turned out and hopes fans will agree it’s a remarkable achievement, putting it in the same category as other impressive Switch ports like DOOM 2016, Wolfenstein, and The Witcher 3. They also anticipate that owners of the next-generation Nintendo Switch will enjoy an even better experience, with higher resolution and smoother performance whether playing on a TV or in handheld mode.
System Shock Key Features:
- Unravel the chilling story of SHODAN’s rise and explore the mysteries of Citadel Station, piecing together the truth in this atmospheric sci-fi world
- Face perilous traps, puzzles, and a legion of hostile and mutated creatures — created and controlled by the villainous SHODAN herself
- Choose between a male or female-presenting Hacker protagonist
- Improved gyro aiming and Joy-Con 2 mouse support adds gameplay versatility for both controller and mouse and keyboard players
System Shock is now available for $39.99 on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. If you buy it on either platform, you’ll get it on both! (This feature will be available in Southeast Asia shortly.) You can also find it on PC through Steam (and it works with the Steam Deck), the Epic Games Store, GOG, and the Humble Store. It’s also playable on PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S.
For those wanting to finish the System Shock story, the remastered version of System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary is now available on Nintendo Switch for $29.99, and it will also work with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
