Nightdive Studios recently shared some exciting news about their update on the remastered version of System Shock 2. Originally called System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition, this contemporary reimagining of the classic 1999 sci-fi shooter has been renamed System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. The release date is expected to be revealed next month.
System Shock 2, developed by Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios, is a science fiction shooter game where players venture into a starship overtaken by an evil AI named SHODAN, attempting to survive amidst the chaos. Though it didn’t enjoy commercial success upon its initial release, it was revolutionary in video game narrative storytelling, establishing design benchmarks that later games like BioShock would follow. Moreover, this game catapulted Nightdive Studios into prominence by acquiring rights to the series and re-releasing it on Steam in 2013.
After that, Nightdive Studios gained recognition for revamping classic PC shooter games like Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Quake, Rise of the Triad, and Star Wars: Dark Forces using their KEX game engine. Notably, they also kept hold of the System Shock intellectual property and produced a complete remake of the original System Shock. However, a remastered version of System Shock 2 using the KEX Engine has taken longer to release than expected. Nightdive Studios hinted at developing System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition in 2019, but updates on this project have been inconsistent over time.
Currently, Nightdive Studios has announced they will share updates soon. Specifically, they plan to disclose a particular release date at the GDC 2025 Future Game Show Spring Showcase. This implies that we can expect it to be launched quite quickly – definitely before the game reaches its 26th birthday in August.
When the 25th Anniversary Remaster of System Shock 2 becomes available, it can be played on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
