Sydney Sweeney is a hugely popular actress right now, and she had a busy 2025 with several projects. Her most recent one was a big hit in theaters, and it’s still gaining popularity now that people can watch it online.
The movie The Housemaid, based on Freida McFadden’s novel, was released in theaters on December 19th. After a string of less successful films, it proved to be a breakthrough hit for Sweeney, and continued to perform well on iTunes, according to FlixPatrol.
Although Zootopia 2 performed well in theaters, earning over a billion dollars, it was quickly surpassed by The Housemaid. The Housemaid became the number one movie after just seven days, with Zootopia 2 in second place. Greenland 2: Migration, starring Gerard Butler, also debuted on digital platforms the same day as the new Zootopia film.
The book was a big hit, and the movie version lived up to expectations. Made with a $35 million budget, The Housemaid earned $310 million around the world – a fantastic result! And with strong digital sales, it’s expected to continue earning even more.
The film received generally positive reviews, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating with 74% approval from critics and a 92% rating from audiences. Viewers particularly enjoyed how closely the movie followed the book.
Turning a popular book into a movie or show is always challenging, and some changes are inevitable. But the adaptation of The Housemaid managed to make those changes while still staying true to the story and its appeal, which viewers enjoyed.
Featuring Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester and Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway, The Housemaid also stars Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins. Paul Feig directed the film, based on a screenplay by Rebecca Sonnenshine.
The Housemaid Has a Sequel in the Works
Shortly after the movie The Housemaid came out in early January, Lionsgate quickly announced they were working on a sequel. They also plan to begin filming sometime this year, with Sydney Sweeney returning to play Millie.
Good news for fans: there’s already a follow-up novel called The Housemaid’s Secret, and another, The Housemaid Is Watching, was released in 2024. This opens the possibility of more films beyond the first one. Currently, only The Housemaid’s Secret has been officially approved for production. Rebecca Sonnenshine, who wrote the screenplay for The Housemaid, will adapt the sequel, and director Paul Feig is likely to return as well.
Since Sonnenshine and Feig did such a great job with the first book adaptation, fans can be optimistic that they’ll stay true to the story in The Housemaid’s Secret as well.
The Housemaid is available to rent or purchase on digital platforms.
