The new movie, Christy, starring Sydney Sweeney, isn’t getting great reviews, continuing a recent pattern for the actress. Sweeney plays boxer Christy Martin in the film, which also features Ben Foster, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, and Merritt Wever. Currently, Christy has a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating mixed reactions.
According to Deadline, the film Christy is expected to make $1.25 million during its first three days in theaters, playing in 2,814 locations. This puts it on track to open at number 11, behind Tron: Ares. Although it might perform better on Saturday and climb into the Top 10 by Sunday, the opening continues a trend of lower-than-expected box office results for Sydney Sweeney.
I’m a bit worried about Christy’s performance at the box office. It seems like this is the third movie starring her set to come out in 2025 that hasn’t had a strong opening weekend – it brought in less than $2 million over its first three days. Both Eden, a survival thriller directed by Ron Howard, and the crime thriller Americana also opened below that mark – Eden with $1.05 million in 664 theaters, and Americana with around $500,000 in a much wider release of 1,100 theaters. Hopefully, her next project will do better!
Although the recent films released in 2025 haven’t performed as well in theaters as some of Sydney Sweeney’s earlier work, this is happening as part of a larger trend: her movies haven’t been as successful at the box office since the big hit, Anyone But You, in 2023. That romantic comedy, with Glen Powell, earned an impressive $220.3 million despite only costing $25 million to make.
Despite early success, her 2024 superhero film, Madame Web, wasn’t successful, earning only $100.5 million worldwide on a $100 million budget. She then starred in the horror movie Immaculate, which made $35 million – a much better result considering its $9 million budget.
Although Christy’s performance has been declining recently, its strong opening weekend is encouraging. Euphoria star Madison Bailey is likely to see box office numbers improve soon, as she’s starring in The Housemaid, which comes out in theaters on December 19th.
Paul Feig, the director of A Simple Favor, brings us a new thriller, The Housemaid, starring Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. Though it’s still unclear what will happen to the character Christy, the film’s strong cast and crew, combined with its source material – a popular novel by Freida McFadden – suggest that Sydney Sweeney’s recent box office struggles might be over before the end of 2025.
