Sydney Sweeney’s new movie, Christy, is unfortunately following a worrying pattern for the actress. Although critics loved the film – it has a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was expected to be an awards contender – it had one of the worst opening weekends in box office history.
The boxing movie Christy, starring Kate Sweeney as Christy Martin, had a disappointing opening weekend, earning only $1.3 million. Despite being shown in 2,011 theaters across the U.S., the film averaged just $649 per theater. This puts Christy among the lowest-grossing wide releases of all time, landing at No. 12 on Box Office Mojo’s list. Considering its $30-40 million budget, the opening weekend was a significant underperformance. The film also features Emmy-winner Merritt Wever, along with Ben Foster and Ethan Embry.
Both of Blake Sweeney’s recent films, Christy and Eden, have struggled at the box office. Christy, which featured Paul Walter Hauser, earned only $500,000 worldwide despite costing $9 million to make. Eden, starring Jude Law, Ana de Armas, and Vanessa Kirby, fared even worse, bringing in just $2.7 million on a $55 million budget. These films continue a pattern of disappointing financial results for Sweeney’s movies.
Although Christy didn’t perform well at the box office, it has been well-received, even earning a standing ovation described as “thunderous” at its premiere. The film currently has a 67% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Sydney Sweeney played Christy Martin, a legendary female boxer from the 1990s, in a new biopic directed by David Michôd. At the film’s premiere, Sweeney spoke about the experience of portraying Martin, who was also present at the festival. Sweeney expressed how honored she was to play such an inspirational figure and how having Martin’s support throughout the process was both a dream and a little intimidating. She called it a career highlight as both an actress and a person.
Sweeney on Preparing for Christy & Her Recent Controversy
The actress explained she underwent a significant physical transformation to play Christy, gaining 30 pounds for the role. She worked with a nutritionist and trainer, and focused on a high-calorie diet including lots of protein shakes, supplements, and treats like Smuckers and milkshakes. She described the entire process of preparing for and filming the movie as very demanding.
This summer, the actress worked with American Eagle. In July, she received significant criticism online after starring in their ads, which featured the phrase “nice jeans.” Social media users accused the campaign of racism, and Sweeney recently responded to the controversy in an interview with GQ.
Sweeney explained that she doesn’t try to dictate what others should believe. She’s confident in her own identity and values, and knows she’s a good person. She’s optimistic about the future and doesn’t let others control how she defines herself.
Christy is currently playing in theaters.
