Sydney Sweeney’s $395M R-Rated Thriller The Housemaid Sets Starz Release Date

Sydney Sweeney’s most successful film is coming to a streaming service. The R-rated thriller was a box office record-breaker for the Euphoria star.

The thriller debuted in cinemas on December 19th and will be available to stream on Starz starting April 1st. It became available for rental on demand just 46 days after its theatrical release, quickly becoming a top performer.

The Housemaid Brought Sydney Sweeney Her Biggest Hit

Sydney Sweeney had a busy 2025 with four movie releases, but most weren’t successful. Her film Americana, originally made in 2023, finally came out in theaters and earned only about $500,000, despite costing $9 million to make.

She appeared in Ron Howard’s film Eden, a thriller with a large cast that received generally mixed reactions, earning $55 million on a $2.5 million budget. Her biographical film about boxer Christy Martin, simply titled Christy, wasn’t as successful, bringing in only $2 million despite costing $15 million to make.

The film The Housemaid proved to be a box office success after a string of unsuccessful movies. It’s based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel and was directed by Paul Feig, with a screenplay by Rebecca Sonnenshine. The thriller stars Jenna Ortega as a young housemaid with a difficult history, alongside Amanda Seyfried, Brendan Sklenar, and Michele Morrone.

With a budget of just $35 million, The Housemaid earned an impressive $395 million globally, making it the most successful film to date for both author Freida McFadden and director Paul Feig. The movie was also well-received by both audiences and fans of the original book.

The thriller has been well-received, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 198 critic reviews. Audiences love it even more, giving it a 92% rating, and it’s currently a ‘Verified Hot’ pick.

Beyond its success in theaters, The Housemaid has been a major hit on demand, consistently ranking high on digital platforms. Released around the same time as Zootopia 2, the two films competed for the top spot. The Housemaid stayed in the Top 10 on both Apple TV and Amazon for an impressive 40 days, often holding the No. 1 position, and prevented films like Hamnet from reaching the top.

As of March 16th, The Housemaid continues to be the most popular title on both Apple TV and Amazon. It’s currently number one on the Apple TV store, beating out Marty Supreme, and holds the top spot on Amazon, ahead of Anaconda.

The Housemaid Has a Sequel on the Way

Following the huge success of the movie adaptation, Lionsgate quickly approved a sequel. Author Freida McFadden has already written two additional books in the series, including “The Housemaid’s Secret” which came out in 2023. Both Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone are expected to return as Millie Calloway and Enzo Accardi, respectively.

Paul Feig is likely to direct the next film, and he’s working on it with producers Todd Lieberman and Laura Fischer, as well as writer Rebecca Sonnenshine. Lionsgate is aiming to begin filming in 2026.

The Housemaid premieres on Starz on Apr. 1.
