Sydney Sweeney Says She Doesn’t Align with Jean Controversy Views

Sydney Sweeney is now speaking out about the controversy surrounding her American Eagle jeans campaign. After staying quiet for months, the actress told People magazine that she doesn’t agree with the negative views some people associated with the campaign. She was surprised by the strong reaction, explaining she simply liked the jeans and the brand. Sweeney clarified that she doesn’t support those views and that assumptions made about her motives are incorrect. The Euphoria star also admitted she wishes she had spoken up sooner. She’s always worked to unite people and is against hatred and division. Sweeney realized her silence had actually made the issue worse, and hopes the new year will bring more focus on common ground instead of disagreement.

An advertisement featuring Sydney Sweeney from July 2025 caused confusion because she playfully mixed up the words ‘genes’ and ‘jeans.’ Some viewers thought the ad suggested she was attractive due to her genetics – like her hair and eye color – and that she was linking attractiveness to the clothes she wore. In the ad, she stated, “My jeans are blue,” after explaining that genes determine traits inherited from parents. Sweeney avoided addressing the controversy while promoting her films Christy and Americana. However, in a November GQ interview, she clarified she simply enjoys wearing jeans and that was the extent of the ad’s message. She explained she wasn’t bothered by the backlash, stating, “I knew what that ad was for, and it was great jeans.” She added that she only speaks out on issues she feels strongly about, and this wasn’t one of them.
