Sydney Sweeney reveals shocking truth about Christy fight scenes

In a fresh, motivational sports film, Sydney Sweeney portrays boxer Christy Martin, and she’s shared the secret behind her convincing fight sequences.

Sydney Sweeney has established herself in various genres following her success on the teen drama “Euphoria”. She’s explored horror with the film “Immaculate”, romantic comedies like “Anyone But You”, thrillers such as “The Voyeurs”, and even appeared in a superhero production titled “Madame Web”.

Lately, she has been working hard to build more muscles for portraying the professional boxer Christy Martin, the pioneering female boxer inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame.

Title of the movie is “Christy,” which made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. It garnered mostly favorable responses, with the action sequences often commended for their excellence. Given that they were skillfully captured on camera, this positive feedback isn’t surprising.

Sydney Sweeney’s punches are real in Christy

In Christy, unlike many action films, the actors often throw genuine punches, real stunt performers aren’t typically needed, and there’s minimal use of camera tricks to create an authentic-looking boxing scene.

In a conversation with Vanity Fair, Sweeney stated, “In every fight scene you witness, it’s essentially us delivering genuine blows to each other. We don’t hold back. I’ve always thought that if it’s not real actors performing the fights or if the impacts are fabricated, the authenticity would be lost.

Preparing extensively beforehand was essential, as Director David Michôd remarked, but actress Saoirse Ronan was ready for it: “She was eager to work. She was eager to learn martial arts, she was eager to spar, she was eager to change herself, and we’ll need every ounce of that determination.

In her youth, the actress learned jujitsu, grappling, and kickboxing. However, her martial arts background required adaptation for the movie since “my stances and a significant portion of my technique differ from boxing. I don’t square up in the same way, and, as you might expect, I don’t get thrown to the ground – everything remains on my feet.” (paraphrased)

In addition to her role preparation, Sweeney underwent a significant bodily change for the movie, amassing approximately 30 extra pounds and dedicating multiple hours daily to weight training and boxing over a three-month period. As she shared, “I felt incredibly strong and powerful.” This experience was delightful for her. The ability to immerse myself and serve as someone else’s vessel is my ultimate aspiration.

On November 7, 2025, Christy will make its debut on American television screens. For a compilation of top-notch sports films throughout history, feel free to check out our list right here.
