Sydney Sweeney says the attention around the chemistry between her and her co-star during the promotion of the 2023 rom-com Anyone But You wasn’t planned. While the publicity highlighted their connection despite both being in relationships at the time, Sweeney insists it wasn’t intentional, even though it helped the movie become surprisingly successful. In an interview with Variety on October 27th, she stated, “The press really drove that narrative themselves. We didn’t actively try to encourage it.”
She explained that the media simply fabricated and exaggerated the story. Even innocent interactions, like standing nearby, were blown out of proportion – ‘They’re standing two inches apart!’ Instead of believing it was a planned publicity stunt, she believes the attention stemmed from a genuine connection. ‘Glen and I really care about each other, and we have a lot of love and respect for one another,’ she said. ‘I think people could see that we were a truly lovely couple.’
Okay, so after promoting ‘Anyone But You,’ Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell kept playing up their connection, which was fun to watch! I remember Sydney’s ‘SNL’ monologue – she tried to bring out her fiancé, but the camera hilariously cut to Glen in the audience instead! It’s crazy because she and her fiancé actually split up later, and now she’s supposedly dating Scooter Braun. But it wasn’t all laughs. Glen’s girlfriend at the time, Gigi Paris, was seriously hurt by all the playful teasing. She talked about it on a podcast, saying she felt completely blindsided and that the whole thing – whether there was anything real between Sydney and Glen or not – ended up damaging their relationship. Apparently, it was all a PR stunt, and she felt like they used them to create buzz.
Paris Hilton was referencing comments made by the film’s stars about promoting a romantic connection for publicity. In April 2024, Powell told the New York Times that the movie’s success came from the actors’ genuine fun and chemistry, saying, “That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen.” She admitted they sometimes played that up a little – and it worked, praising Sweeney as “very smart.” Sweeney confirmed her active role in marketing, stating she participated in “every call.” This raises a question: did they genuinely maintain boundaries, as Sweeney implied, or intentionally foster the appearance of a romance, as Powell suggested? We’ll likely find out more when the sequel is released.
