Today’s news reveals that Nintendo won’t introduce the Switch 2 on its initial release in China. However, this shouldn’t catch anyone off guard, as a report from Nikkei suggests they are conducting market surveys to determine if and when the new device will be launched in China.
According to analyst Daniel Ahmad from Niko Partners, it wasn’t surprising that there was a delay in the release of the Switch 2 in China since it wouldn’t have been released immediately due to the necessary approvals.
In June, China might opt to purchase gaming consoles from international markets through unofficial channels, excluding possibly Japan. Meanwhile, Nintendo is contemplating potential methods for an official debut in China, as stated by Ahmad.

Ahmad added some background information: The Nintendo Switch wasn’t released in China until almost three years after its initial debut in March 2017. Similarly, both the PS4 and PS5 consoles, as well as the latest Xbox systems, didn’t make their way to China at launch. Ahmad explained that a combination of factors play a role in this delay: obtaining necessary approvals and regulations, finding suitable partners, and meeting demand.
In order for companies outside of China to launch their products, they often require a Chinese business partner. An example of this is Nintendo, who teamed up with Tencent for the release of the original Switch in China. Similarly, Sony collaborated with Shanghai Oriental Pearl to distribute PlayStation consoles, and Microsoft worked with BesTV to bring Xbox consoles into the Chinese market.
The new Nintendo Switch 2 will be available starting from June 5th, not just in the U.S., but also other markets worldwide. Nintendo has announced a retail price of $450 for this console, yet some analysts predict an increase in cost as a result of tariffs, while others remain skeptical.
Initially scheduled for release on April 9th, two pre-orders for the US market were anticipated, but Nintendo decided to postpone these pre-orders because of the implementation of tariffs. The corporation stated that they needed additional time to evaluate how the tariffs would affect them.
