Supernatural Theory: Amara Is The Key To Making Season 16 Possible

With so many TV shows being brought back, a return for Supernatural isn’t a huge shock. Considering the show’s abrupt ending during the pandemic and both Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki having ideas for a potential season 16, it seems likely we’ll see the Winchester brothers on screen again within the next decade.

The biggest challenge for the next season of Supernatural is how to move forward with Dean gone, Jack now possessing godlike power, and Sam’s fate seemingly set by glimpses into the future – even with a slightly awkward disguise. Surprisingly, the answer to this storytelling puzzle might lie with Emily Swallow’s character, Amara – the Darkness, who has shifted from villain to ally and potentially back to villain again.

Amara’s Ending In Supernatural Season 15 Didn’t Completely Make Sense

In the final season of Supernatural, Amara’s story unfolded quickly. Initially, she remained neutral during the conflict between the Winchesters and Chuck. However, she eventually sided with Sam and Dean, before ultimately being persuaded to reconcile with her brother. This reunion restored Chuck’s complete and original divine powers, setting the stage for the final showdown.

Once Chuck is defeated and Jack takes his place as the new God, Supernatural reveals that Amara is now living peacefully alongside her great-nephew, which keeps the universe in balance. However, this resolution feels surprisingly simple. Amara initially sided with Chuck after feeling let down by Dean, and agreed with his plan to destroy the old universe and create a new one.

The ending of Supernatural hints that Jack managed to reason with Amara and change her ways, though this happened offscreen. This isn’t far-fetched, as Amara had previously shown a connection with Jack and expressed a desire to get to know him. The show likely wants viewers to believe this existing fondness allowed Amara to accept Jack as the new God peacefully.

That’s a significant amount of emotional weight to handle without showing us the process. Considering Amara’s brother becoming human, the fate of the universe, and her ongoing anger towards Dean, Jack seems like an incredibly effective therapist to resolve all of these issues so quickly.

Is Amara Still Secretly A Villain When Supernatural Ends?

Amara might be key to what happens next on Supernatural, potentially even a sixteenth season. There’s a chance the Darkness is still secretly working with her brother and used Jack’s innocence to give Chuck his power back. The way Supernatural concluded suggests Amara now exists inside Jack, similar to how she once existed within Chuck. Because they are the two most powerful beings in the universe, Amara and Chuck will always share a connection.

After season 15 and before a potential season 16 of Supernatural, Amara might slowly be taking Jack’s angelic power (grace) and returning it to Chuck, who is still alive on Earth as a human. This could explain why Amara suddenly became an ally at the end of the series, and also why Jack, while busy with the responsibilities of being God, wouldn’t realize Amara was taking his power and giving it to her brother.

Amara’s deceptive behavior might actually be part of a larger scheme she and Chuck are working on together. Considering how easily Sam and Dean defeated God at the end of Supernatural, and how suddenly Jack gained the ability to absorb Chuck’s power, it’s possible that Chuck planned all along to use Amara as a secret operative. Season 16 of Supernatural could reveal this hidden layer to his overall plan.

Maybe letting Jack briefly have God-like power was the key to Chuck regaining his own full strength, or it’s possible Chuck needed to remain human to complete a crucial part of his plan.

Amara & Chuck Working Together Against Jack Solves Two Problems For Supernatural Season 16

If Supernatural were to come back for a sixteenth season, it would run into two major plot issues. Luckily, the established villain Amara already provides solutions for both of them.

If Supernatural were to return, Jack couldn’t continue as a god-like being. He’s become too powerful and too close to Sam and Dean, which would remove any real tension from a potential season 16. A good way to address this when the show continues could be to reveal that Amara is secretly evil, providing a reason to remove Jack from the story.

As a long-time Supernatural fan, I’ve been thinking about a potential revival, and it hit me: bringing back both Chuck and Amara could be brilliant! It neatly solves the problem of who the big bad should be – honestly, it’s tough to top God! While they teased a full-blown showdown between those cosmic siblings and Sam and Dean, they never really went for it. If a revival finally delivered on that epic battle, it could be the most amazing season of Supernatural we’ve ever seen.
