I was really fascinated to hear Nicholas Hoult talk about how he landed the role of Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman movie. Apparently, he actually DM’d James Gunn directly to ask for an audition! It’s amazing to think that a simple message is what ultimately led to him getting the part. It just goes to show you never know what might happen if you take a shot!
Nicholas Hoult talks about securing audition with James Gunn for Superman
Nicholas Hoult revealed he landed an audition for the new Superman movie by proactively reaching out to the director, James Gunn, through a direct message. Hoult explained he messaged Gunn to express his interest in the project and let him know he’d be happy to be considered for any role. This led to a formal audition, and he even got to try on the Superman suit during early costume tests as he pursued the lead role.
According to the book, Nicholas Hoult contacted the producers before the final casting decisions were made. This happened during the early stages of production, as they were still developing the look of the film and deciding on the characters. His involvement began as they worked on things like costumes, tweaked the script, and created concept art for Superman – played by David Corenswet – and the rest of the cast.
Hoult went into auditions eager to collaborate with James Gunn and interested in the possibility of playing Superman. While he initially auditioned for the lead role, Gunn ultimately offered him the part of Lex Luthor. Hoult said he reacted with enthusiastic laughter when Gunn proposed the idea, even letting out an “evilly cackled” response over the phone. He admitted that after reading the script, he felt instinctively that he would enjoy and perform better as Lex Luthor.
The book details how Nicholas Hoult went from trying out for Superman to ultimately playing Lex Luthor, thanks to James Gunn seeing him as a perfect fit for the villain. It also reveals that Hoult shares the screen with David Corenswet, who plays Superman in the movie, and confirms Hoult will reprise his role in the upcoming sequel, Man of Tomorrow.
