The upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow, is shaping up to be a particularly bold project for DC, and it’s more than just its large scale. As a sequel to James Gunn’s successful 2025 reboot of Superman, the movie will unite David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and a team of DC Universe heroes against a never-before-seen threat.
Production for the film is moving quickly, with filming scheduled to start in Atlanta in April 2026 and a release planned for July 9, 2027. As the cast and plot are finalized, it’s becoming apparent that Man of Tomorrow will introduce several groundbreaking elements to live-action DC films – things we haven’t seen in a DC movie before.
4 DC Movie Firsts in Man of Tomorrow
Superman & Lex Luthor’s First Live-Action Movie Team-Up

For decades, Lex Luthor and Superman have been rivals on screen, but the new film, Man of Tomorrow, will be the first time they’re forced to team up in a live-action movie. Director James Gunn has described the film as telling both Superman’s and Lex Luthor’s stories equally, with the two characters working together to face a greater danger.
Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor was a highlight of the first Superman movie, bringing a chilling and calculating intensity to the character that felt truly threatening. Pairing him with David Corenswet as Clark Kent in an uneasy partnership is something we haven’t seen in live-action DC films before.
Superman and Lex Luthor have often been forced to work together in comic books, typically when facing a danger that’s too big for either of them to handle on their own. That uneasy alliance, and whether Lex can truly be trusted, is what makes this a fascinating story for a movie.
Brainiac’s First Live-Action Movie Appearance

After nearly 50 years of Superman movies, the villain Brainiac finally appears on the big screen. Despite being one of Superman’s most well-known enemies, Brainiac has never been successfully featured in a live-action film—previous attempts unfortunately fell through. Now, Man of Tomorrow ends that long wait and delivers the cosmic-level threat that Superman fans have been hoping for.
Lars Eidinger, a German actor, will play the villain Brainiac (also known as Vril Dox). The casting was announced last year, and while Brainiac has appeared in live-action TV shows like Smallville (played by James Marsters) and Krypton (played by Blake Ritson), he’s never been brought to life in a live-action movie before. That makes Eidinger’s role a first for the character and a significant moment for fans.
Brainiac, a super-intelligent being from the planet Colu in DC Comics, is obsessed with collecting knowledge. He usually does this by shrinking entire cities and storing them on his spaceship, which is shaped like a skull. He’s such a powerful villain that the upcoming Man of Tomorrow story will feel more like a Justice League event, requiring heroes and even some villains to team up and defeat him.
Lex Luthor’s Warsuit on the Big Screen for the First Time

Lex Luthor’s famous armored suit, a powerful exoskeleton usually colored green and purple that allows him to fight Superman hand-to-hand, hasn’t been seen in a live-action DC film until now. The upcoming movie, Man of Tomorrow, confirms the Warsuit will be included as part of the production.
This suit first appeared in a 1983 comic book (Action Comics #544) and was originally created by George Perez for DC’s Super Powers toy line before becoming officially part of the story. It quickly became one of Lex Luthor’s signature weapons, letting him go toe-to-toe with Superman in a physical fight. The suit gives Luthor the ability to fly, greatly increases his strength, and is equipped with weapons made of Kryptonite.
The Warsuit first appeared in live-action television on The CW’s Supergirl in 2018, initially worn by Lillian Luthor and later by Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor in season 4. It also made an appearance in the final season of Superman & Lois. However, Lex Luthor has never worn the armor in a live-action DC film – until now. Seeing Jacob Hoult’s Luthor step into the suit on the big screen is a moment DC fans have anticipated for a long time.
John Stewart Green Lantern’s First Live-Action Movie Appearance

Aaron Pierre is set to play John Stewart, marking the character’s debut in a live-action film. John Stewart is a popular Green Lantern and a groundbreaking African-American superhero who first appeared in a comic book in 1971. Created by Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams, he became a fan favorite, particularly through his role in Justice League: Unlimited. Despite his importance to DC Comics, John Stewart has never been featured in a live-action DC movie until now.
Wayne T. Carr filmed a scene as Stewart for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but it didn’t make the final cut. He was also originally cast in the unreleased films Justice League: Mortal and Green Lantern Corps, but both projects were cancelled. Unfortunately, external factors prevented his character from appearing in any of these films.
Pierre will debut as the character in the upcoming HBO series Lanterns, where he’ll play a Green Lantern training with veteran Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) while solving a murder in the Midwest. The series is scheduled to premiere in August 2026, and his role in Man of Tomorrow in late 2027 will naturally continue the character’s story. Since the villain Brainiac poses a threat on a massive, cosmic level, it makes sense for a Green Lantern to be involved.
