Based on what we’ve seen of Supergirl in the DCU so far, she’s a very different hero than her cousin Superman, and that’s a good thing. While David Corenswet’s portrayal of the hopeful and selfless Superman was great, it will be equally interesting to see Supergirl as a hero who isn’t perfect but still gets the job done. Ultimately, it’s important for her to be a character who battles her own demons while striving for something bigger. Director James Gunn wanted Kara to have struggles similar to those faced by male heroes like Iron Man and Star-Lord, giving her a relatable and complex journey.

What I really connected with in both the book and the movie was how the female superhero wasn’t perfect. Often, male heroes like Tony Stark and Star-Lord are flawed and messy, but we don’t always see that same level of imperfection in female leads. It was refreshing to see a character who was genuinely flawed and struggling, yet still had a good heart.

It’ll be fascinating to see how the new Supergirl movie portrays Kara, a character with a lot of depth.
