The upcoming Supergirl movie is expected to be a huge hit this summer, especially after the exciting trailer. However, some fans are surprised by the choice of villain: Krem of the Yellow Hills, a lesser-known character from DC Comics. Many moviegoers aren’t familiar with him, which has raised a few eyebrows.
Krem is a character primarily known from the comic book series Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Since the movie is based on that comic, he’s a key figure in the story. He sets Supergirl’s journey across the universe in motion, and while he doesn’t have superpowers, he’s essential to the plot.
Krem Of The Yellow Hills Lacks Superpowers, But He Has Powerful Connections
As a huge comic book fan, I’ve always been struck by how dangerous Krem is. He’s an incredibly talented fighter with both swords and ranged weapons, making him a key asset to the King. Honestly, the things he’s done are chilling. He casually killed a young girl’s father, shot Supergirl out of nowhere, and even poisoned Krypto – all without even seeming to try. He’s a seriously formidable villain.
He doesn’t have any powers of his own, so he steals Supergirl’s spaceship when he understands she’s too strong for him, even without her powers. But his real danger comes from his alliances with a group of space pirates known as the Brigands.
After landing on a planet populated by blue and purple aliens, he brokers an alliance by inciting a devastating civil war – convincing one group to wipe out the other. This earns him access to powerful weapons capable of sending Supergirl vast distances across the universe, and the support of a complete pirate fleet.
The movie seems to establish Krem as a long-standing member of the Brigands, meaning he’ll begin the story at his peak strength. Even with his crew’s help, though, he could still be defeated by Supergirl if she’s careful and doesn’t fall for his schemes.
Krem’s Atrocities Are What Put Him In Supergirl’s Path
Krem is to blame for the conflict in Woman of Tomorrow because he drew Supergirl’s attention to himself. Specifically, his attempt to harm Krypto with a poisoned arrow is what motivates Supergirl to assist Ruthye in her pursuit of revenge against him.
If Krem hadn’t targeted Supergirl, the famous story might never have happened. Supergirl was actually leaving the planet, heading home after celebrating her 21st birthday with a night out. Krem wasn’t on her mind at all – she was explaining this to Ruthye when the first arrows started flying towards them.
After that, I noticed Krem got really cautious. He realized he couldn’t fight Supergirl on his own, so he started relying heavily on his Brigands and all sorts of magical items just to try and hold her off. But honestly, it didn’t matter what he did – nothing could stop her! She just kept coming, even when he tried to send her to a planet with a green sun, which weakened her just like Kryptonite would.
Supergirl Isn’t Krem’s True Rival
Although Woman of Tomorrow is a classic Supergirl tale, it’s not the story that truly worried Krem. His real opponent is Ruthye, the character who pursues Supergirl throughout the universe.
The story unfolds mainly through her perspective, making it clear she’s been most affected by Krem’s deeds. Krem murdered her father when she was a child, and she’s been seeking revenge ever since.
With Supergirl’s help, she’s chasing after him as he escapes the planet, driven by a burning desire for revenge. As the story unfolds, she begins to understand just how powerful and intimidating Ruthye truly is.
In the comic’s most intense moment, he’s captured while Supergirl battles the Brigands. Even while tied up and blindfolded, he encourages Ruthye, eventually convincing her to release him so they can have a final showdown. They fight on the beach, and Ruthye ultimately severs his fingers. As she moves in for the finishing blow, he suddenly understands she was the real threat all along.
Despite her doubts about taking his life, it’s clear it wouldn’t be worth it. Even so, the fact that he got her here, and the journey she undertook to reach this point, highlights how important Krem is to the story. The same holds true for Supergirl. Even if the show doesn’t follow the comics exactly, this lesser-known DC villain is essential to the plot, making him the perfect opponent for the hero.
